Q: What if 'losing face' didn't exist?

Where would China be if they didn't have the 'losing face' culture? The most obvious example I can think of is when I see minor accidents on the road and both parties get out and blame the other because they don't want to lose face. Take this an apply it to a larger scale and there is chaos. I can see China doing something outrageous in the AIDZ dispute because they created it but no one is listening to them so they're losing face.

China would be much better off than it is now and we would have less to complain about on this site...

The concept of being afraid of "losing face" is only a symptom, not a cause. This is a symptom of not being able to confront bad experiences in a grown up and responsible manner.

This is a comment I've read on some news from Netease a while ago :

"Politeness in the west means having high expectations toward yourself, politeness in China means having low expectations toward others."

Sums it all up.
