Q: What is the least survivable wage in a city like hangzhou?

if  accommodation was free except bills. You want some night life and occasional western dining and to save 50 percent of you wage. Would would a sensible wage be for a city like this?

It depends on your lifestyle.

The nerd type of expat like my colleague Matthew can live on a few hundred RMB per month excluding rent, only buying food if he's already got he latest gaming rig. Those guys are hardly concerned with their appearance and what other people think of them.

A party boy like my friend Christopher will spend a LOT more in nightclubs, socializing and looking good to get approval from other people because it is the most important thing to them. Social butterflies can't really be who they are without spending money.

Different people have different expenses.

Can't give you a figure but I'd suggest the same as in any big 2nd tier city.

You need to give more specifics... what sort of 'western dining' are you after, and how much are you willing to pay? How "occasional"? What's "some night life" for you?

Given you've taken rent out of the occasion, it would be possible to do what you said on 3000/month (or less). It might suck, but that depends on the sort of person you are!

I would say the least you should be getting in a Tier 2 city for going out to club/eating out and being able to save 50% would be... 5000-6000 rmb

Anything less than that and it would probably be rice and noodles everyday with very little money for entertainment.

If you also want to save 50%, then maybe 9-10k. You could live off 5000 I would think if your rent is free, leaving you with 5k for the bank. I agree with Robk.

Budget 500 RMB per week for going out once a week and eating some decent food a few times a week.

Shining_brow:

Not in HZ.

I budget at 1000/week (not including rent), and I tend to go out once or twice to spend only a 100-200, plus other miscellaneous such as coffees, lunches, etc., and nice food from the import supermarket.

If he's going clubbing and drinking, he'll be paying a LOT more than that! 40+ per drink at a nice bar, uber-expensive at the clubs (30+ for Tsingtao at a club!!) Basic (cheap) meals at a western joint will start at 50... going up to 300 (more if he's shouting others... and drinking).

Transport costs... if he's close to the city, and the clubs/restaurants... taxis might only be 20. If he's further out, could be up to 100.

Electricity, water gas... meh, not a lot....

500RMB in HZ really won't go far.

i am in shanghai and get around with 500 rmb per week for 2 people.

weekend eating out 2 times, during week we cook.

no clubbing though - just normal living.

so 1000 will be more accurate for clubbing and western dining

hahaha now this is the question every ambitious man must ask himelf!

How little can I earn?

I'm pictuing someone in a salary negotiation.

"well sir for this role we are offering 24,000 RMB/mth"

"Cut that in half!"

"12,000?"

"Cut it half again!"

"6,000?"

"Yes! Where do I sign!"

I've bought two houses after offering more than the asking price.

Different folks, different strokes, my friend.

I would guess that would be because there were other offers on the table and you had to beat them out if you wanted to buy the house.

Not because you felt some kind of charity for the seller.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
