Q: What is living in Guangdong like?

Hi

I have a really good job offer in Guangdong. Since I've lived mostly in North China, I'd love to hear the pros and cons of S China/ Guangdong. I heard the climate is very good!

Summer is unbearable, 5 mins outside and most people start sweating even the locals. Which is why the streets are near empty during summer after 9am and before 6pm, people stay indoors.

TheGardener:

Really? I lived there for a long time before Shanghai and people were always out and about at all times of day

Guangdong is very big, which part are you thinking about working? I'm in Shenzhen GuangDong and it great here, never felt the need to change cities. I & others can tell you more if you tell us where you're planning on moving to in Guangdong.

Hotwater:

Zhuhai is a nice city. I've been quite a few times, especially to Qi Ao island to relax. Not sure if I'd want to live there. The layout is odd. It's a very long and thin city hugging the coast.

Zhuhai is a great city. The most famous attraction is the Zhuhai Chimelong Ocean Park which is the biggest over the world

I am not a doomsayer like the others.  I think Guangdong is great.  Guangzhou is certainly cosmopolitan enough and there is more than enough to do to be able to really enjoy China.  Zhuhai is charming if not provincial and Shenzhen is huge, artificial and somewhat overwhelming.  Yes, it can be humid during the rainy season but compared to the Dong Bei, it is just great.  And particularly in Guangzhou, a foreigner will not be subject to the incessant "laowai, laowai".  I am thinking about buying an apartment in Guanghou.

I lived in Guangzhou a while. It gets very hot in Summer, and the humidity was almost unbearable at times. It seemed even more humid than Bangkok (which is the World's hottest city). It's a good weather for frogs and trees, less so for human beings.

Guangzhou is very populous and when my friend visited from Shenzhen she thought it was too busy.

Guangzhou's airport is really big and has direct flights to loads of places.

I found Shenzhen a bit boring as there aren't so many tourist sites/quirky things than there are in Guangzhou. Shenzhen was also more expensive... stuff in 7/11 was about 20% more, over the course of a year this would really add up.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
