All I've heard about in the news is Chengdu and the Sichuan region. Are other highly populated parts of the country prone to earthquakes?

There was a small earthquake in Beijing several years ago. It was a minor one. When it happened I didn't feel the shake, but the people that were close to the CBD area felt the rumble.
This article has a map of fault lines in China http://usa.chinadaily.com.cn/epaper/2011-03/21/content_12201556.htm
Technically pretty much all of China can have earthquakes, but some areas will be far enough away from the fault lines for any quakes to be actually noticeable. There was an earthquake recently a bit north of Shenzhen. It can be measured but most people only knew from Weibo.
The more relevant question is how many buildings near the fault lines are build to withstand quakes.

I hope you are not living on one of the fault lines, although if you were you would most likely know already
Tangshan, near Beijing, had a massive earthquake in 1976 (worst in modern history). It killed 240,000 officially, though some reports say 850,000. It is featured in the movie Aftershock.
that would be Aftershock from 2010 not 2012 which is about a quake in Chile
I was there in SZ when had that EQ,, truth is I never noticed it,, like they said,, the only way I knew was when someone told me about it. I was also in HZ when the 2008 Wenchuan hit. I read some of the first reports when they were saying like 80 people dead or some such.
I was in an EQ in Tacoma, Washington and also in one outside of Anchorage, Alaska. If you have never been in one, let me just say,,, they get your attention.
God Bless those living on Fault Lines.
