Countries where the native language is English.

In practice this means the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. And sometimes South Africa.

People often argue that places like India and some African countries speak English as an official language too but in the ESL world native speakers usually means people from those 5 (6) places.

Only Chinese born in China are/can be native Mandarin, i.e. mother tongue speakers .... surprise

It is the same with any other language, i.e. Malagasy is a native language spoken in Madagascar ...

Only people holding a Madagascar passport qualify as a native Malagasy sneakers ...

It's a controversial term once you dig deeper ...

LloydinYibin:

yeah because Hakka, Cantonese, and many other Sichuan languages are native languages of mainland China. and thats just a few as examples

Me & Wiki... disagreez!

These are Chinese language variants/dialects and there is only one Chinese native language, i.e. Mandarin.

Same as there is no native Canuck (like yourself and W. Gretzky) or native Oz English speaker (like Philo and Sandnoso).

There are 5 or 6 native English countries, where English language ( single ... with its dialects) is spoken.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_language

"The spoken varieties of Chinese are usually considered by native speakers to be variants of a single language."

You need a passport from the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland or South Africa.  That's what it means in practice.

Lot of downvoting going on in this thread, it seems common with these type of questions.

People need to understand nobody here makes the rules, explaining what is meant by a term commonly used in job advertisements is just that, explaining what is meant.
