In 2003 in Guangzhou, I was living with one of the female editors of That's Guangzhou magazine. One night in bed, she told me she had an official invitation to the football stadium for Saturday night, and wanted me to go with her.
When I asked if it was a football match, she quite matter of factedly replied "Oh no. It is public executions."
I still don't know whether she was for real or not, but I think she was, and I slept very uneasily that night.
Anyone else had bizarre invitations?

I don't think anyone can top "public executions". You should've kept that one in your hand until you got a few responses!
Once invited to a school talent show where kids aged 4-5 were dressed up as vegetables doing this sort of fashion/cat walk show thing. I had to look away.
I had a "friend" whom I met on the train, and who lived in the same complex as me. Well, he invited me to go have fun with hookers despite knowing that I'm married. I politely (for a Hulk) declined and avoided him since, but sometimes he follows me around with his arm on my shoulder and buys me bananas... and won't shut up or leave me alone.
Traveler, nobody can conceivably top the public executions invite. Surely...
this is a public announcement ceremony where the judge picks the ones for execution in front of camera for show to public as a deterrent to crime, reporters invited not general public then they carry the ones to be executed away and the criminals are shown being hauled away for the evening news on army trucks. my chinese attorney gave me this information, so maybe. tic

I doubt they would have let a foreigner in. Not that I would have gone in any case.

I've heard that in Saudi Arabia they not only invite you in to public executions, but they give you great seats because its an extra shame to be punished in front of a foreigner.
Hmmmm, if the choices were
a) public execution
b) Justin Bieber concert
c) Going to a KTV
I would not know what to pick
mattsm84:
For me it would depend on the method of execution. Obviously, a trip to the KTV is preferable to a beheading, a stoning, a quartering, death by 1000 cuts, a hanging, the electric chair, the gas chamber or death by Bieber. But if they were going with lethal injection or death by firing squad, I think I could probably stomach that.
A fellow teacher told me that some woman I didn't know wanted to invite me to go on a day trip with her and her kids. I asked her how far it was, and she said the place was 3 hours away! No thanks.
I was once invited to a party and all the men threw their car keys in a bowl, the women picked one of the car keys from the pile, she found the owner and she was his for the night. My first wife ( who was born in Germany) was so shocked she took my hand and we went home. At that time I had never heard about wife swapping and was also shocked. Ha Ha Not as shocking as a public execution Franck3
the end of semester Christmas show my department put on.
there was no reference to Christmas at all despite being called the Christmas show.
the male students sang embarrassing songs, while dressed in strange costumes
the female students dressed and danced like pole dancers
senior staff members sang and danced popular comic songs.
foreign 'friends' were also invited to take part, but we all declined so we had to freeze our asses off as 'honoured guests' for 3 hours.
I still don't know how serious the guy was being but this is China and anything is possible. Several years ago in Heilongjiang, I got invited to a KTV bar by a group of police officers. One quite intoxicated police officer that looked quite senior in rank, told me that for a cash payment of 2000 rmb, he could take me somewhere and watch female detainees being strip searched. That is one invitation that I gave a miss to.
