Ummm... just people buying up stupid stuff they don't need.

Not really interesting if you ask me. I respect people with intelligence, class and manners. Sure if you got money and EARNED it yourself, that is a respectable trait... but shamelessly flaunting one's wealth just proves they lack in ALL other areas I mentioned.

It's very distasteful.

Talking from my own perspective, I remember coming to China on a business trip back in 1995. I was one of a group of four buyers. We were invited to a meal laid on by a Taiwanese shipping magnate who was living in Dalian at the time. His permanent residence was the penthouse suite of a five star hotel.

The meal he provided consisted of lobsters, crabs, imported meats, vintage French wines and a host of other delicacies.

I happened to be sat at the side of him and managed to see the bill when the waitress presented it at the end of the night. It came to not far short of 12,000 rmb which he signed off to his room account without even giving it a second glance. Bear in mind this was 20 years ago for eight people in total.

Typical "fuerdai" activity that I have witnessed:

I was sat in a bar with another foreign national in Qingdao. A fuerdai type came in with his girlfriend. He bought a bottle of Martell Cognac Brandy, poured some in a glass, took one sip then both of them left with practically the whole bottle left on the table and a full glass. I am not sure how much he paid for a bottle of cognac in a bar but it wouldn't have been cheap.

A) Posting questions on forums - but rarely providing any answers or explanations (or backstory).

B) not what was intended, but... the twats who think that having money allows them to race at 180kph down main roads in their expensive cars - and end up killing other (and, unfortunately, only occasionally themselves - thinking they can get away with anything anyway)

Hotwater:

A)....same as talkword.

Re the tw&ts in cars shining. Yup. But is it show of wealth or wanting your kid to have all?

My ex boss is worth a bit. Bought his 17 year old son a super hatch. Not Chinese. Irish.

A 17 year old in a fast hatch. Never made it to 18. Nor did another 17 year old and a 16 year old. Hit a stone wall at 60mph. Not in China.  Lots of people never the same after that.

Money does not always bring happiness. Too often it brings sorrow.

Now that's something I can agree with! Also point A

My example is a modest one. But being a Scotsman and all that.

Hometown weddings. Total waste of money.

The cooks set up an outside kitchen, spend days preparing food, Sharks fins are shredded, exotic fish are minced, chickens and ducks die by the hundred.

And the villagers turn up in their vests, sit for an hour eating as little as possible.... Awaiting the sign that starts the dabao fest. Half an hour later the place is wrecked, and not a single guest to be seen.

Weddings should be fun. Drunken capers, people falling over, and people remembering how good it was.  Here, it's just people turn up, pay their 10rmb hongbao and leave with an expensive takeaway.

Waste of money.

Oh yeah. The super cheap Beijou they put on the table. Rubbish.Even I can't drink it

Scandinavian:

as oposed to the big town weddings where people spend a fortune on what is in fact utter unpleasantness. If you drive your bride in an open Ferrari to a 2 hour dinner with loud distorted music, then you are just an ass.

ScotsAlan:

I take your point scan. And I agree.

A girl I know got married last weekend. Stunning girl. Big money wedding. She posted photos on we chat of gold, dozens of roast ducks, and D&G carrier bags.

But we all know she is like that. A high cost girl. Get what you pay for and all that. As shallow as the sea over the spratleys.

I am talking about the good hard working people. The normal people. Us.

If some rich people want to show off their probably I'll gotten gains, then leave them to it They can afford it. Hate to see working couples and their families save for years for a "big" wedding, just to see people treat it like a freebie food takeaway.

To me, it's not about how much you spend if you have the money. It's about how much you spend when you don't have it.

Who the hell cares how others spend their money? I'm not rich and I spend money on some ridiculous things, why? It helps to make me happy. Everyone buys ridiculous stuff at some time or another. Rich people can buy more expensive ridiculous stuff. Who cares.  I'm happy in my life.

But there are the scum who will buy bottles of expensive champagne, just to tip it on the floor - to show off how rich they are.

Who the hell cares? Its their money. If I buy the Mona Lisa and set it on fire, it's my business. Once I buy something it's mine to do whatever I want with. When I was a kid I would buy action figures and model cars to blow them up on the 4th of July. Same principle.

I play in a band with some local guys. Our drummer is an obscenely rich owner of a dozen huge chicken farms and a really excellent down to earth guy. Not to mention a shit-hot drummer.

Anyways, we were asked to play at a wedding in town a couple of years ago. We knew the groom and he loves rock music.

So the day arrives and drummer picks me up in his new Mercedes SUV. Nice. He's feeling very proud of himself and his pimped ride. We arrive at the wedding and it looked like Kanye West's garage. Wall to wall ferraris, lotus, lamborgini etc..... I watched as my friend's posture crumpled....lol (he was laughing too)

To cut a long story short, it was a rockin' show and everyone was doing crazy uncoordinated dancing. Even mums, dads and grandparents - all laughing and having a huge time.

When the ceremonial part started people started to put gold bracelets and neck laces on the new wife. It was absurd how much gold she had on. She had to keep sitting down because it was so heavy..ha ha ha

It must be said, that although this was a group of probably the most rich people here, everyone was very nice and friendly. I detected no tuhao arrogance at all. Even the couple of scumis laowai in the band were treated as kindly as everyone else. After a few hours playing, we were spent but to keep the party going, the groom put a cardboard box on the front of the stage and told everyone that were were tired so if they wanted more rock they would have to pay handsomely. Oh, and they did. I went home with bleeding fingers and more cash that I could put in my pocket

A great night.

This wedding made it into the news. No mention of the killer band though.

Invited to some Xinjiang restuarant by a friend of mine and there were 8 bottles of drinks (not wine, something else). Each cost 2,000 RMB each and my friend well... bought them all!

The meal was pretty expensive too but I am guessing the food didn't even cost one bottle of that drink. I don't know what that drink was but it tasted like blueberry mixed with some herbs, was absolutely delicious but would I have paid 2,000 RMB? Mmmmm... only if I was a millionaire!

Another example is eating at a Sushi restaurant, the salad I ordered cost like 230 RMB, they ordered a Tofu dish which cost another 600... In total I believe the meal for 3 people cost about 2,400 RMB.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
