Q: What is the most unpatriotic thing that supposedly patriotic Chinese people do?
I would say anything that enforces conformity and mediocrity, but this is incredibly generic so I was hoping you could contribute some of your experiences of situations which have made you really cringe at the sheer hypocrisy of some of the people who're considered authority figures here.
My own specific example is this. My school advertises itself as a place that fosters creativity but makes the kids stand in line as some mug (who always seems to have the most ridiculous haircut) screams at them to stand straighter and cease thinking.
Militarism is the greatest enemy of creativity.

Buy iPhones. The celebration of American technology and innovation, highly materialistic product built by underpaid slave workers in China.

Military cultures actualy breed ceativity. Look at the USA for example. from memory it's military budget is equal to the added budgets of the next highest 13 highest spending countries combined. China $188 billion.... USA $640 billion.... almost $2 biilion a day. They can spend that much a day on killing people....... yeah..... thats development for you. If it was up to me guns would be banned. Armies and navies and air forces would be banned. As should execution. No state has the right to take a life.

I would argue that having a large military does not necessarily constitute a military culture. It (USA) doesn't have an involuntary draft. There is no voluntary military training in schools. Neither are there popular military songs or marches. In fact, a large percentage of people in the United States are against the wars it fights. One the other hand, the culture in the military is very restrictive and draining of one's unique identity. The classic way of training a new recruit is to reduce him to a cog in the machine. The only creativity in the military is in creating new ways to kill people.

If a large proportion of Americans are against war, why are they at war? Its a democracy. Why did the 72 republicans go behind the back of the democratically elected president to basicaly declare war on Iran?

China aint perfect... but nor is the west.... Malcolm Rifkind MP, chair of the UK security council... resigned cos he was caught taking bribes from a journalist posing as a Chinese businessman. Jack Straw too. Stalwart of the UK left wing. Both exposed as corrupt.

@scots... I disagree that they went 'behind the back' of the Executive branch. I also think it is a bit out there to say 'declared war on'.
Are you possibly asking/saying what right does any one nation have to tell another nation what to do? excellent philosophical question. Not easily answered.

Execution by the state always has political benefits for the person who signs the warrent. I agree with the Norwegian system of maximum sentences. No true life sentences. Problem people should be examined and rehabilited... not swept under the carpet. But, If I were a victim I would probably vote for Sharia law to be allowed to chop the fuckers head off.... its complex... If I was a victim I would try to follow the example set by the Amish when they had the school shootings... forgive... not hate... difficult. really difficult.

I agree. Very difficult. As a Christian and a humanist I find myself continually pulled between the ethos of the New Testament versus the Old Testament. I truly do believe that I see the value and superiority of following Our Lord Jesus Christ as he shows us the way- Matthew 5:39
However I must admit as a flawed, weak soul I seek simple revenge.

and right now, lately, I've been Old Testament. strong stand up for the weak. look at how people are butchered on our Earth by other 'men'. Can we really turn our cheek to them? I don't know. Perhaps it is a test?
anyway, at this point of my evolution I believe in the authority of the 'State'. God help us it is a worthy 'State'. In other words, I would put my faith on US/UK/Canada/Australia/Germany/NZ over Tehran any day.

@ Diverdude1, isn't a "Christian humanist" an oxymoron? I don't mean that in a belittling way, just interested in how you describe yourself. My understanding of Humanists is that they didn't follow a religion.

@Hotwater - yeah, I was probably using the term Humanist in the wrong way. I can't really think of the appropriate term. I just meant that I care for mankind's (and the individual) well-being, physical as well as moral/spiritual, as much as or more than I would care to follow any religious dogma. So, I guess I am a conflicted Christian. 
Supporting a government that doesn't have the country's best interests as it's priority. Also chanting that they love their country then using it as a giant toilet/trash can.
Here's a few:
- Hating on America while enjoying iPhones, NBA and Microsoft Windows on every computer
- Hating on Japan while enjoying Japanese cars, electronics and their foodstuffs
- Loving and admiring a man whose decisions killed approx. 60-80 million of their own people
- Hating on WaiGuo yet sending all their children to study abroad
- Yelling at other Chinese for losing face then the next moment spitting, pushing (doing the same thing)
- Watching as their fellow countrymen suffer and die without helping (some do help but rarely and if they DO help, they are blamed for causing the accident)
- Thinking that loving China MUST mean you love the CCP too

Looks like the road every night across the street from my apartment complex after the sellers from the outdoor market go home - they leave their trash strewn about for someone else to clean up. And it just sits there. And nobody seems to care.
hating the government, but snitching on anybody who complains the wrong way. blaming the government or even foreigners for things they are responsible for, and preferring to complain stead of improving. just complaining in general, then when presented with a simple solution, responding with: "you think too much. you don't understand China." loving money and being openly selfish and greedy, while at the same time being better at spendingthan making money, and not having a clue how to put their greed and selfishness into practice. everyone in the world is greedy, but Chinese decision-making makes them so hopeless.
Claiming that China is the best country on Earth yet trying to emigrate to Western countries by any means.
Truly patriotic people? South Koreans or Japanese, very few emigrate, most really love their country and believe it's the best on Earth while not picking or hating on others.

In the city I live in there is a big South Korean community. I think about 11 thousand.
The simplest, and most obvious that comes to mind is trashing the country. Spitting, throwing litter, peeing on the streets... it all shows complete disregard for the country.

Yeah. what I don't get is the plastic rubbish dug into the soil in the fields. Specifically, the red plastic bags. So easy to pull them out as you cultivate.
