Q: what other sources of heat do you use
coming to china, if heat provided does not warm apartment, can you find electric blankets, portable heaters ?
I know someone who slept with his laptop.......it was that cold!
Normally, the heat provided is plenty to keep an apartment warm. If you are going to Northern China, then the heat will be on 24/7 and you will wish you could turn it off/down, but you won't be able to. :) Welcome to China.

you can easily find electrical blankets for under 100 RMB, electrical heaters for under 1500 Rmb for bigger models, I also use an electrical hand warmer. But be aware, running a heating system on electricity 24/7 will be very costly, more than running A/C in my experience.
After receiving a bill 6 times larger than normal, I only use heat in bedroom or bathroom while in it, otherwise keep all widows close and chase all opennings that allow cold air in. With outside temperture near 0 degrees C, inside I manage to keep maybe 15 to 17 C. Just keep an eye for girlfriend to crack open a winbdow at night so she will not die for lack of oxigen in air, but may get pneumonia instead.
I bought a nice radiant heater for about 350RMB which I kept in my bedroom most of the time, but occasionally opened up that door to the dining room next to it. I could leave it on almost 24/7, and yeah, my powerbill skyrocketed - but still within my means. It meant I could easily walk around in my shorts and t-shirt all day - while it was snowing outside!
I'm not sure I'd buy an electric blanket here for under 150RMB.... cheap ones die easily - and unfortunately, also cause deaths by catching on fire :( Much safer just to buy blankets, or invest in nice thermal underwear.
Of course, I think the best option is a nice warm girl to snuggle up next to .... 
Blankets rule, but for walking around, space heaters work very well, also.
I do like the last option you mentioned, however, two work best. One on each side. Kinda makes one feel like a sandwich...
Try more dogs, the colder the night the more dogs you sleep with ,so you say how cold last night was by how many dogs you slept with,, so last night was a three dog night. however in China there are not that many dogs . You can substitute maybe for something else, maybe two legged creatures.so last night being a three dog night was very pleasing and who cares about the cold. But be warned they have cold feet.
