Q: What is the proper way to acknowledge Tomb Sweeping Day?
I told someone recently "Qingming jie kuai le" and they looked at me like I'd just clubbed a baby seal to death.
I get now that there's nothing "kuai le" about sweeping the debris off of your dead ancestors graves, but how should I properly acknowledge this to Chinese friends?
There is no equivalent. It's not a day of celebration so there's no way of saying "happy tomb sweeping day"

I don't think it matters if you say day or festival.....no one is as anal as you
Traveler:
There are a lot of people that are just as anal - you, for example.
well, Thai's really do go clean tombs/shrines... probably old rural Chinar's do as well...
but for u as a weiguoren to acknowledge it ? it's not that sort of thing. unless u happen to have ancestors with their tomb/s in MK.
your appropriate response is just as crimo says 'say nothing'.
Have a good sweep? Did you sweep well? Sweep dreams? I don't know...
