Q: What is the R-visa really?
Disclaimer: No I don't plan on applying for an r-visa, I'm just really curious.
So, what's the deal with the r-visa? Does anyone know anybody currently with that visa, or who plan to apply for it? I don't. I tried to google and baidu the information, but all I get in return is the same sentence "...senior-level foreign talents and professionals whose skills are urgently needed in China" which talents are needed in China? Who decides what's needed? is there a list? Is this a real visa or was it just added to show "yeah we totes welcome foreigners", or is it all deliberately secret?
Hell, I couldn't even find how long you can stay with an r-visa. I don't know why this is bothering me, but I just want to know!

I actually did google it, but somehow managed to miss it. I have a knack for missing things right under my nose it seems.

I just use Y! in China. GOOG doesn't load. I can see emails arrivals to Gmail through Safari/Mail. No News or anything else.
I'm here R under a visa, so it's for real. It gives you one year, renewable. Compared to a Z visa, it's less red tape and it's processed really fast, one week or less. It's also less hassle for my employer. I think I can not cumulate jobs under that visa.
To get a R visa, your qualifications and past experience are a good start. But what truly matters is your sponsors : your employer, who's funding your employer and who is helping your boss (say, the industrial parks managers). Also, it have to be for sectors marked as essentials. Art history won't cut it, rocket chirugy will do.
R visa is really retarded. It sounds just like the Z visa.

Yes, they should have thrown-in some perks like "can drive-drunk" or "can horn like a 5 years old is on the wheel"... Wait a minute...

Theres probably some perks we don't see behind the scenes, like for example companies can be limited to a certain number of Z visas based on their capitalization and other factors. Im just guessing here but maybe the R visa doesn't count against the cap.
Senior level talents are going to be people who are proven commodities from the west in fields that China doesn't have a lot of access to. Usually in the STEM fields but also executives in industries that are still trying to get off the ground.
Remember there is practically no one here with more than 20 years of experience doing anything meaningful. There might be millions of fresh grads in aerospace engineering, but in the whole country maybe 10 people with the experience to successfully oversee the end-to-end design of a competitive modern aircraft. Just an example I know nothing about aerospace here.

Yeah experienced STEM people does make a lot of sense and I suspected this might be the case, however I was wondering if there might be a more specific list of skills/fields/areas, OTOH I guess it would be very much case by case anyway.
