Q: What is the ratio of expat men and women in China?

I have wondered this for a while. I'm guessing there are more men, but I can't find the answer. Anyone know?

About 3 men for every 2 women.

From the 2010 census.

I. Total Population Covered

The census covered 234829 residents from Hong Kong SAR, 21201 residents from Macao SAR, 170283 residents from Taiwan, and 593832 foreigners residing in the territory of China and receiving census enumeration, totaling 1020145 persons.

II. Sex Composition

Of the population covered, 605821 persons were males, and 414324 persons were females.

Of all residents covered from Hong Kong SAR, there were 141321 males and 93508 females. Of all residents covered from Macao SAR, there were 11708 males and 9493 females. Of all residents covered from Taiwan, there were 116547 males and 53736 females. Of all foreigners covered, there were 336245 males and 257587 females.

we are assuming that chinese census count is correct , like the pollution numbers , crime statistics , economic reports before the quarter ends, etc.

my school got a call from the psp this year, asking how many filipinos did we have teaching at the school on a z visa, i ask the director of the school why the psp cant pull up the records they have for this, and he gave me the "this is china" look.

if you cant move your bank account with the same bank without closing to go to another city , do you think the government has accurate numbers on legal foreigners from the provinces.

I don't know about China in general but in Nanning in over 2 years here I've met about 8 or 9 expats, (I don't hang out at expat bars etc) and all of them were males with either a Chinese wife or girlfriend. I haven't met one single female expat, the only ones I've come across are the ladies on this forum.

ambivalentmace:

the women could be here on other visas and not teachers. many domestic helpers from philippines that are maids by law and english teachers for the spoiled kids of the rich. this could boost the female count higher.

TheDude's numbers work out to 336,245 foreign men and 257,587 women in China, or 1.305 foreign men per foreign women in China.

ambivalentmace:

does the foreign count cover all students from africa , russia , cuba , etc. this could skew the numbers somewhat

The dude's stats are quite interesting - I'd actually have expected a much higher proportion of males to females. The chicks must hang out in the tier 1 cities, because I barely saw any.

Those stats imply a much higher proportion of females than I've seen or anecdotal evidence from elsewhere has suggested.  I'm thinking the census doesn't take tourist visas into account, and if this is the case it makes more sense;  quite literally every single person here in China that I've met here staying long term on a tourist visa (HK runs etc) has been male.  This is likely to result in a male: female ratio on the ground far higher than official stats indicate

That three out of five figure has been pretty close to what my experience through work and time spent in expat bars has been. I think that the biggest difference is that men are just more likely to stay for longer periods of time.

In my experience there are way more guys than girls. I'd say two girls to every ten guys. Just look at the foreigners on this forum, about 80% of them are blokes.

I have been in small citys where we know every westerner in town.

in 2 citys, there were no females at all.

in the last city there were 19 males to 2 females.

no the females have left and its at 21 males to 0 females..

perhaps they stay in S.H. or Beijing (not using the initials for that one) or S.Z or somewhere.

I've been the only female foreign teacher in our college for 5 years. It's not that I don't like men, all the male foreign teachers are nice & pleasant dudes, but it would be nice to have a lady - expat  around to go shopping together or just to talk to.

Third/Fourth tier city reporting in. 4 men, 2 women (one is a married couple). I met another couple doing some semester long program at a private school. You know what they say- Shandong is for lovers. Or flights between BJ and SH. One of the two.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
