Q: What is the reason for the color red being so popular in China?

Is there any special significance in using red as a color so often?.  And in female underwear mostly?.  With black being a close second, why is this?.  Any superstition?.  Or is it traditional?

There flag is also red and I can only assume red is so popular in China because of this reason. In holland orange is popular and in Jamaica yellow, green and black are popular. Irelands favorite color is green etc.,

The color red is supposed to keep away bad spirts and promote luck.  Especially if it's the years of the animal you were born under, then you're always supposed to be wearing red and many of both sexes choose the red underwear option.

I assumed it was because red has something to do with communism as well as being China's official color......But DaBen's answer makes more sense.

Red stands for happiness and good fortune.  In ancient times, it was the color adopted by the royalty and ruling classes as a symbol of wealth and power, and that has also persisted through to this day (ex.  the walls of the Forbidden Palace are what color?).

During Chinese new year, red scares off the Nian (a big lion-dragon beast - I'm sure you've seen statues of it).  It comes out on Chinese new year to eat people, but it's scared of the color red and loud noises - hence people wear red clothes (especially children - the Nian LOVES him some children), hang red outside of their doors (to stop Nian from coming in), and light firecrackers (the louder the better, which are also often red - to sybolize good fortune and happiness - and as a double whammy against the Nian).

For female underwear, the reasons are a bit less awesome.  Sure, there might be some of the good luck thing....  But darker color underwear is more popular because it doesn't show stains as easily.  And red, well, self explanitory, just use your imagination.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
