Q: What is Shanghai's average salary for Chinese?
According to Chinese statistics its about 7000 RMB.
According to also Chinese statistics you have to earn 1,000,000.00 RMB per year and have a house (paid) and a car to be middle class
TIC
Try searching Baidu Vicky. You'll get a better answer than asking on an expat website.
My guess would be about 6k/month. Please find some data to prove me wrong.
Chinese about 6k or maybe a bit more... But if I was to work in Shanghai I wouldn't work for less then 25k a month.
dom87:
china is not more or less expensive as other cities.
If your housing is covered you can live very well on 4k.
SaifMalik:
I know, but I am personally not a huge fan of bigger cities. So I'd expect a lot more for the hassle of living there. Also I do live in China, in a smaller City and I usually get by fine on 4k a month. But I wanna do traveling and stuff and I'll probably spend a lot more money in Shanghai.

The statistics might say 6k or 7k, but the data is extremely skewed, because of the huge wealth gap between the uneducated poor and everyone else. I'd reckon the average college educated Chinese person is easily making over 15k a month. How else do you think so many Chinese people are able to afford apartments and cars in Shanghai?
If you think you're still making a lot more money than the locals in China as a foreigner, then you need to wake up. Everyone living in my community is driving a foreign brand car. These people have money.
Viki87:
The online saies the average Shanghai salary is 8825rmb in 2016
Viki87:
Probally that they are getting load to afford. I don't everyone can afford. Or the community you are living in is for rich people who owns business or a senior manager in a company.
dom87:
I recon that you don't know china.
The initial wealth came from the gov.
My ex landlord got 6 apartments for free 10 years ago, but is still working in walmart for 2000 RMB.
He drives a bmw 5, not because he earns much from his jobs, but from his rent.
People cannot afford to buy a house from the scratch. Most in Shanghai got one while it was cheap or for free and now are just trading or upgrade with 1m loan.
In my company the avg. is less than 10k and I push it high with my salary.
In my wife's company it is also less than 10k, but all drive big cars. All are shanghainese and got at least 1 full paid apartment.
All who dont have one, also dont drive a good car
xinyuren:
While its true you see a lot of Chinese driving expensive foreign cars, do not make the mistake in thinking they are forking over cash to buy them. Most of them are financing automobiles in arrangements with terms as long as 20 years (something like the structure of a lease)! Never underestimate the power of face.

per capita GDP (nominal) for a family of 4 is around 103,000 RMB per year. I dont know if this is based on a two income family or not (probably so).
Viki87:
I think it's one person's income. Shanghai's salary is relatively higher than the other cities as it is a first tier city.
silverbutton1:
ya, you are probably right. at 103,000 per year, that calculates to around 8,600 RMB per month. just note its 2015 stats.
