1. Pray

2. Negotiate a bribe

3. Go home if price is right

4. Get deported if price is wrong

5. Reflect upon your stupidity that got you arrested

2584825521:

If you are arrested in China, you can't rely on money to bribe. If you beat someone, you can only lose money and apologize. If the other party doesn't understand, you can only eat Chinese national food. If you are drugged, you will die.

Depends on what your offense is.The first suggestion is contact your embassy and always carry enough money to at least get you out the door" 5,000 rmb", drugs depending on what city, province and what along with how much is 5 to 10 years and your embassy can only contact your family along with ensuring you are not beng abused. Fake degrees in schools are a big problem when it comes to disgruntled employers and parents, generally you'll be asked to leave the province, in Beijing and Tianjin, they'll escort you to Hong Kong and black stamp your passport for 90 days. If you don't have a degree and you got a teaching job, your school did create one for you so tread carefully when they say no problem. Driving without a license on two offenses in most provinces are fine and black stamped for thirty days, although we had one case in Shanghai where a client was arrested and jailed for 90 days then escorted to Hong Kong after only one ticket but I do believe his problem was not giving any money, he literally said that was corruption, LOL, umm if you are doing something illegal never play double standards, it's not going to work for you. Anyway, you would need to be more specific if you're actually looking for something other than a general answer so I can ask my employer directly.

importbob.com:

Great info.  We have 3 cute kids and, i have to admit, get a lot of special treatment.  A few months ago we didn't get a renewed passport back in time before the visa expired.  I didn't think it was a big deal, you know, small fine and a slap on the wrist.  It turned out to be a nightmare.  Even though we were able to get a fairly substantial discount deduction on the fee is still hurt.  So my advice is don't ever put yourself in a situation where justice is working against you as opposed to with you.

I would suggest stop thinking about it. I can't understand why you even ask this question at all. The country is safe and the police will not bother you. Just keep you nose clean and you'll be okay!
All I can say is good luck

I should of replied to the question.. if you get arrested it is your own stupid fault!

Also depends on who you know and how big your town is. In smaller towns the right connections can get you off entirely. In bigger cities its harder to make powerful enough connections.

A friend of mine has been arrested a few times for drunken disorderly (including some property destruction) but our rich well connected boss smoothed it all over. Which is quite the feat considering that the guy has no degree to boot.

Shut up, admit nothing, speak to your consulate and get its advice...

techezee:

Usually I really like your posts, call your consulate of course but read your passport info page. Consulates cannot advise you or help you in any legal matters. That is up to a lawyer in the respective country. The only thing a consulate can do is inform your family of the situation so they can help you. Consulates and embassy's will not even help you exit the country if you over stayed your visa by one day.

They cannot act as legal representatives but: "Although consular officers cannot act as your legal counsel or representative, they can provide the names of local attorneys" Puts you on the radar, keeps the Chinese honest and you know you'll be getting a decent lawyer if they're providing you with names of local attorney (I know they hand pick the the names they give you for a reason)...

Always keep a good reputable lawyer's business card. Don't say anything, ask to speak to your lawyer.

and better yet dont get arrested!

Foreigners in China are always in disadvantage in any legal dispute against a local counterpart. If its a minor offense just try to apologize to all parties involved and pay the money they ask for "compensation". First bargain of course...

OR just tell them that your father's name is LI GANG and you will be released immediately Wink

I was once in a place south of the river in Liuzhou and one night I heard screaming, like someone was in serious pain. It went on for four or five hours, during which time I came to the conclusion that someone in this much pain should be in a hospital and I thought this poor sucker couldn't afford the fee and I should go help him/her. Yeh, I actually thought this. So I stood at my window and listened, trying to locate the source of this agony, and then it hit me.................it was coming from the local police station. Someone was......i'm guessing.........being tickled with a heavy duty tickling stick. Happens everywhere. But there was no secret about it in this town. This guy was being used as a load speaker. "THIS IS WHAT YOU GET IF YOU BREAK THE LAW."

Now, what was I supposed to do? I honestly thought, maybe I should bowl in there, proud as punch, and demand that this injustice be put a stop to. And then I heard another scream. In English this time. And it was coming to me across the sands of time from the future. And it was saying, "mArtiAnnnnnn...................you moronnnnnnnn.......................How was this for a good ideeeea?"

My advice is, don't get arrested.

This is the season when more foreigners tend to get arrested as a result of too much drinking, too much KTV, and honestly, sudden enhanced PSB checks of persons on L and F visas who are working here.  Mid-December until the beginning of Spring Festival is the worst time of the year for those flying under the radar.

If you are arrested, remember that essentially the PSB\ makes the law.  The law is what the PSB say it is and what the local PSB says it is.  It's a bit of a terrifying thought indeed but it's the reality of things around here. As callused as SimonRainbow's answer might appear, it is actually not very off the mark, except perhaps for Divine Intervention.

1. Try not to drop the soap bar when it's shower time.

2. Make friends with your cell mate you'll be with him for awhile.

3. Cry and cry until you learned your lesson.

4. Don't make eye contact with the inmates.

5. Watch your back and try not to get in trouble while you are there.

I'm pretty sure the average westerner is so much larger than the average Chinese that they'll just stare at him in envy, too nervous to approach. Especially come shower time...

i actually got arrested, twice. Both for a fight: one time in bj with a taxi driver and one in shanghai with a chinese guy (there was those chinese kitchen knifes involved)

In BJ actually it wasnt really i fight: i just bitchslapped the taxidriver a few times and spit on his car. Got a crowd to deal with later, but i talked chinese and that became a public forum where i was practicing my rhetoric. Then we went to police station, i called my consulate and they got me out of there. The police actually just want me to apologize and want the taxi driver to accept them.

In shanghai was kinda different, but after 1 hr i was out.

Have to say that shanghai police according to my experience is able to deal more neutral between foreigners and chinese.

no, i just know how to manage people on different level. With some I talk, with other i just mock them (...), and with other, when they try to threaten me I move on on the next level.

Sparky, you got many problems, way more serious than mine: why don't you try first to deal with yours? I really hope for you that you're not older than 12....;)
