Q: What is the test for a Chinese drivers licence like?

I have watched people learning to drive in China and they spend a lot of time just parking and driving in and out of some poles hanging in the air and marked parking spaces. Driving training areas with these are everywhere.

Is this because that is what you need to pass the driving test?

Do you also have to actually drive on the road as well when you learn and also for the test as is done in most other countries?

Is there a theory test? If there is can it be translated for non Chinese speakers?

Are there road rules handbooks?

From what Ive read you can pay someone to do it for you in some places
there was a article a while back with sample questions on echinacities
99 questions I belive you need to do but no practical driving test
I think the cost was about 300cyn
they are all multipal choise
One asked when it was safe to drive
a after drinking alchol ?
B after drinking tea ?
The answer depends on what you need to steady your nerves before driving in China
Let me know how you go and good luck with it

the 100 questions test is only if you already have a foreign license. If not you should take the full test (5 parts).
As for the lessons, yes, once you manage to control your car you go on the roads.
If you only need to take the theory exam, no need to pay someone to do it for you. You can easily do it by yourself and save some money

Is there a certain time limit you have to be in China for to take the test as I am a frequent visitor only? Can I then keep my licence for as long as I want even though I will normally be on 60 day tourist visas?

You have to hit all the dummies, then back over them. If you only graze one, jump out and stab it to death.

red envelope with a lot of maos. you must lack any sense of humanity, aim your car at people and blow the horn. if you hit someone just drive off, no need to waste your time running them over more than once, remember this is the land where people leave each other on the road to die

You need to have a visa that allows 3 months for each stay.
You must have your foreign license for more than 3 years, and probationary of temporary licenses are forbidden.

if your holding a valid DL from your home country, you simply have it, your passport, home address translated by an authorised center and then present it to the local PSB and then be introduced by a driving test office. You only need to sit the theory, and some, not all places will issue you with a book ( all in chinese ) and a CD in English, these are all the questions you need to revise for the test, some you don't need to as its for motorcycles only. The driving test office will get your papers sent to the test center and you turn up and sit it....you can take it twice in one visit if you fail, and you need a pass of 90% to get your license. A small tip, some of the questions and the answers will seem dumb to you, don't get hooked up them, just remember the answer they are looking for and get your license. If you fail both times, you need to return to the driving test office and pay 35 rmb for the re test, they will let you know when it is. Paying a company is not legal at all in anyway, just do it yourself, save thousands, and know that you did it and never worry about consequences should you be caught...or worse. As for validity of chinese license, my wife's is 6 years, and mine is 10 for some reason, and we both took the test at the same place ( FOSHAN ) and on the matter of your Visa, i was told different things, 3 months any visa will do..blah blah, but it transpired in my case anyway, 12 month work visa, residence permit, and a rental agreement or ownership of house .....i didnt argue is that was no problem, but i have a friend in Wuhan or got one based on a 3 month Business visa with no fixed address...as with working in China, different provinces adopt different methods. Good luck to you, stay safe!!

In GZ it's different than Foshan in that you can take the test throughout the day until you pass it, or until the office closes and in Nanhai (a Foshan district), if you fail the test, you cannot take it again and have to come back another day (and pay again, of course). It seems that it depends not only of the province but of the city as well.

From the test questions, it seems that the validity of the license is 6 years, then 10 years, then lifetime after the second renewal.

Different city, different rules.
Books in English are available for cars in Tianjin, for example, with the local city rules. Nothing for motorbikes anywhere any more, it seems. A "Beijing standard test" is translated on the Shenzhen Party site which is useful.
I've not seen any "ability" demonstrated by Chinese drivers, despite the Driving Schools and testing required. Parking skills are non-existant for car, truck, bus, and taxi drivers, the schools are p1ss1ng in the wind.
I'm glad "L"oonie drivers aren't allowed on the road here. I believe a lot of red envelopes change hands.
