I don't know if you would like answers from a Chinese student who has gone through 12 years in a fourth tier city in China. If you do, I could tell you some. There are more than the four options you provided.

Physical punishment. When I was in 5th grade, my math teacher kicked 4 students down in a row because she was very angry at something. I can't really remember it.

The teachers also threaten the misbehaved kids they would be suspended or even kicked out from school. It's not likely to happen, but still useful to some kids.

Fine. It has been on news reports that some schools fine the misbehaved kids, like if someone is late, 5 Yuan. Pretty controversial.

Shame the misbehaved kids in public by forcing them to read self-criticizing essays in front of all the other students. This is very very common.

Change the student's seat to some corner or the very back of the classroom. I myself got this punishment in 1st grade. It was 1997, I clearly remember, despite that 16 years have passed.

So much I have thought of so far.

my school, which i am thankfully out of now, didn't back up any of the foreign teachers who tried to impose any discipline in their classes. I would remove phones from students who used them for the following in class

making calls
Texting
QQ
playing games

these students were 3rd year university students and TECHNICALLY adults.
so i did something they understood: removed their phones.
this was undermined by the staff who would come in with excuses for the students.

so the school provided NO disciplinary mechanism in support of the teachers

RachelDiD:

Yeah, that's how the middle school in Beijing where I worked ran. I figured that, since it was a real school, and not a training center, I would be allowed to teach and run my class with a reasonable amount of discipline. Ha! Let's just say, I figured wrong. But, if you think you are likely to get away with teaching a well-run class in a training center, you are even more wrong. The thing is--bratty Chinese kids are typically rewarded for their terrible behavior. That is why so many fat little brats actually seem proud of themselves for acting like little shitheads...they are, that is what they have been raised, and encouraged, to do their entire lives. They are extensions of their equally spoilt, stupid, and childish parents' egos, and as such, make their parents proud by disrupting everything and everyone around them to prove that they can. Of course, those brats grow into adults unchecked--that is how you get the world's most immature university students...to say nothing of grown father and sons trashing each other's Mercedes on a street crowded with other peoples' cars---bratty and immature displays of affluence are the way to go in this country.

My understanding, at least based on what I know of lifestyles of the stupid, spoilt, childish parents that I encountered, is that they typically get a very high up nominal position (nepotically, of course) at the factory/whatever, and a minor official with a less prestigious position does all the work while they uselessly go proudly kicking around with their little title next to their names. And they seriously must do zip--I once had both a father and a mother come to the school in the middle of the work week to yell at me for giving their kid no good behavior points (because those are earned?)...my point being, if your presence is so irrelevant at a high-paying job that you can just not show up one day so that both you and your spouse can yell at one of your brat's middle school teachers because she didn't give your kid some intangible numbers a week ago, you are pretty much the high-paid, highly-titled, functionally pointless son of someone important. I'm assuming that their brats will do the same--have the money, get the titles, and pretty much do nothing while someone else does the actual work involved in running things.

Foreign teachers do not understand Chinese people. That's why they cannot control the students. Only Chinese teachers are good teachers. All foreigners are bad.

All hail glorious China.

It's EXACTLY the same in Thailand. Just replace "You do not understand Chinese culture" with "You do not understand Thai culture". I have no idea of how this "our culture/nation is so advanced you cannot begin to understand it" came about. Never heard anything like this in western countries or S Asian countries. Simply insecurity?

Death by a thousand cuts for any student who cannot repeat the following extremely important English phrase a 1000 times: "How are you? I'm fine thank you, and you? I'm fine too thank you".
