Q: What unusual fashion trends have you come across here?

My favourite has got to be the glassless glasses. You must have seen them, people wearing glasses that on closer inspection have no lenses. It's a fad that's moved on now but for a time I quite liked it, the first girl I saw wearing them was a particularly smart student of mine and I thought her wearing them showed real humour.

I also thought it a valuable statement in fact, I cannot count the number of times I've seen girls squinting horribly, and all because (according to my wife) they think they'll look ugly in glasses, then someone comes along wearing these big fat rims the size of television sets, giving unspoken permission to others to do the same. The irony of course is that those squinty girls probably did feel encouraged to wear their glasses again, but only with the lenses taken out.

Anyway, that fad's passed and those girls are still squinting, it's just the odd nobhead wearing them now. I actually saw a bloke who must have been in his early thirties wearing a pair a short while ago. I was very tempted to tap him on the shoulder and tell him "Sir, you look like an arse."

The big fluffy pyjamas.

diverdude1:

yeah,,,  them are trippy!  took me helluva long time to get used to seeing the ayi's out and about in public in them~  honestly, I still kinda trip out on it.  I guess it's comfortable, but still seems weird to me.

middle-aged, medium fat guys with their $2 polyester shirt pulled up over their fat bellies.

*sometimes feel so bad for Chinese females,,,  such a large percentage of the male population are gross.  {evidence follows}

1. smoke

2. out of shape

3. make that horrid noise hacking up their lungs/guts whatever

4. pick nose/ears

5. dismissive attitude towards females

6. shout instead of speak

7. affinity for polyblend

8. difficulty driving an automobile

*I liked the lensless glasses too! kinda urban cool/edgy

I saw a guy driving with headlights on the other night.

I have no idea if such a thing will catch on or go viral.

When i first arrived in 2012 in Chengdu, I thought I was witnessing an odd fashion trend. A nice figured woman in her late 20s or early 30s wearing full army camo, and wearing fairly high, high-heeled shoes. Upon closer inspection, I realized she was standing next to an army truck. Then two male soldiers came around. Only then did it dawn on me that this was actually a female soldier, wearing high heeled shoes !  I was amazed. Wish I had a camera for a photo of it, but I didnt.   As ex-military, I wouldnt have believed such a story unless I saw it with my own eyes.

Couples wearing matching clothes. I mean, come on dude, draw the line somewhere. You're already carrying her purse.

I even saw one couple wearing matching winter coats. A T-shirt is one thing, but a coat you wear all winter... that's commitment.

I like the " BEIJING Bikini" thing cause it really helps to show of my belly. I have never actually promoted myself with it, but it does look and seem like a great idea. Few bellys have I seen that could match mine while I am doing my daily jogging.

BHGAL:

another one that my family often disagrees with....  I wear suspenders when I go out...  don't need them, but I like them....  some of the girls snap me, some don't. I have told my "younger" fashion conscious family that it is the "new fashion" back home...... so my daughter (25) bought me 2 more pairs on taobao....  both are junk that I won't wear!!

We have a few wannabe-famous foreigners in my town who rock satin tangfu (I think they are called) shirts - kinda like a man's qipao. They make a huge effort to ingrate themselves and receive lots of congratulations and compliments to their face but lots of giggles behind their backs. Sad try-hards.

You know, the stereotypical traditional shirts that you have never seen a Chinese person wear except in a Spring Festival Gala performance.

mArtiAn:

Do you mean the ones with no collar? I really like those, I bought two, one for myself and one for my brother back home. I wore mine for a week and it's still hanging in the closet ten years later. I love that shirt but some things just aren't meant to be. I'd wear it in England but here I just felt like a nob in it.

Ha ha ha ...that's the one.....these guys look like knobs. They are knobs anyway but the qipao doesn't help.

I've noticed girls are starting to tattoo huge eyebrows on themselves.

A girl I work with recently replaced her natural - I suppose plucked or styled eyebrows -with two huge inkblots that look like they should be on Ronald McDonald. It's a pity because she was quite an attractive girl before.

ScotsAlan:

Ha ha yup. My mates GF had this done. She hid in the house for a week and a half and refused to come out.

He showed me a photo of her face on the day she had it done. We were laughing for 2 weeks :-)

A:You can still skin into China as a non-English native teacher by holding English Teaching license in your home country.2nd: Your BA degree should be completed in a native English country. Once, you fulfilled these 'parameters', you qualify for an English teaching job in China as a non-native English sneaker with Z - Entry/working visa with Working and Residence permit later on. See the last 'Answers Highlight' ---> there is a web link posted about 'requirements for teaching English language in China as a non-English native passport holder'. https://www.gooverseas.com/blog/guide-teaching-english-china#paragraph-item-63614-target

*English proficiency: Passport from one of seven "native speaker" countries (US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and South Africa). If you aren’t a native speaker, you’ll need to be a certified teacher in your home country with proof of your English proficiency (e.g. IELTS or TOEFL). I'd say, Chinese will choose and look especially for a native English speaker at teaching of English Literature job openings. Posted job adverts for English Literature teaching are most likely from International Schools in China. Good luck! -- icnif77
