Q: What was the best set of friends you had in China?
You know how people come and go so often you can have an entirely different set of friends from one year to the next. What and when was your best set?
For me it was year two when I hung out at a small pub located far away from the typical expat scene that became our regular hang out. There was a good 10 regulars there and we shed the other pubs for the company of each other for a good six months straight. We closed the place down when we wanted, we watched movies and sports there and had a great time.
It was a great place to meet cool Chinese people too cause it attracted a sort of bohemian and laid back group.
The place eventually was closed when the owners had a falling out and the one changed it into something else. I see those people often, but it's not the same. At that time I felt like I could stay in China forever, but things change.....
My story is exactly the same. We would go to this small place/resto/pub and would routinely close it down as the owners would just sleep in their little upstairs room. We would let them know we were leaving and we would pay up and all was good. There were 5 of us and we steered clear of the regular haunts cause we genuinely enjoyed each others stories, music and company. We try to get together as much as possible like we did just last weekend. They came to my wedding in June and now another one of our gang is getting married in a few months so we'll hook up again at that time. Good times.
I completly understand how you feel. For a long time I was in the same situation. But now I have a better group of friends then I ever had. Some are in different cities. We fly around to meet each other a couple of times a year. Most recently the Oct. holiday, and next week for the UFC in Macau! The chinese friends in the group live here and better friends than just the pub kind. Sunday dinners together, family holidays. Guys weekends. And of course drinking. I couldnt be happier with the situation. Especially my chinese friends. Ive spent years being the token "lao wai" friend. Being shown off whenever convenient. But these guys dont seem the least bit impressed. They dont ask meet to meet their cousins. If some new dude asks me to teach him English, theyll refuse before even asking me. And if i get in a fight, they are their to whoop some fellow chinese ass. Defintly the best group of friends ive had anywhere, not just China
