Q: What western restaurant to you frequent most in China?
I live and work in a third tiered city. My choice is Papa Johns or Dicos. The McDonalds is too far away at the train station. Whenever I am traveling and I see a Burger King, that becomes my dining option for most of my vacation travel.
What about you. When you are in your city, what is your fav western restaurant? Is there a western restaurant you want to have but don't have currently?
I sometimes go to the buffet in a local five star hotel. There are lots of different dishes from various provinces in Foreignerland.
There are steaks from America Province, lamb chops from New Zealand Province, curry from India Province and Thailand Province, sushi from Japan Province and several other things from Australia Province and England Province.
For such a small country as Foreignerland, it is surprising what a variation of tastes the people can come up with.
I very rarely go to the fast food places, my go to western restaurants are generally all Chinese owned and operated, but have had foreign help with the menu and atmosphere and have resisted the urge to cut corners so they are still very popular with expats and Chinese alike.
An all you can eat and drink buffet at a decent hotel is a great option too.
Reducing western cuisine to fast food.........
My block has a very nice Spanish restaurant serving a wonderful paella, it is owned by two Spanish guys who are both the managers and the chefs.

Lucky you though, I love traveling to bigger cities and having my options for Foreignerland food get a bit more high brow.

I take it you have not read the recent scandal about Subway outlets in China using old or out of date ingredients in their sandwiches.

@Kaiwen Every time I hear a scandal about foreign owned chains in China I am not surprised but I'm still convinced that Subway is far healthier than a typical local restaurant. I've eaten at Subway dozens of times and never felt sick or experienced anything unusual after. Whereas with local restaurant food I often experience diarrhea, nausea or abnormal stools.

Restaurant, none, because I have yet to find a place serving things that feel and taste like we got in Europe. No quiches, no sauerkraut, no boudin sauté aux pommes, etc. The ingredients are hard to find, super expensive (freakin tarrifs) and there's no market for that in China. Fast-food, yes.
* Subway, because it's one minute from my office, and it's good value. Lots of vegetables, cheese, and okay bread. Once a week.
* Papa John's, which have okay pizzas for a reasonable price. Maybe once every two months.
We are lucky in GZ because we have a big Arabic community. Fantastic food to be had at the many Arabic restaurants in the city. Especially in the Xiobei area.
Nothing. No western food where I live. There are a few places that think they serve western food but they would be very wrong.
When I lived in Qingdao the best thing that could possibly be done was go the the Shangri La.....Up to the buffet that included really great food and free grog. The only downer was that they had session times that meant having a solid drink and pacing the eating over six hours was a no no.
Oh, and the Kiwi Cafe. The owner, Danny, was brilliant. An omelete deluxe for a horrendous hangover was worth the price of the hangover. Does anyone know, is that place still there?

Oh I see you mentioned a Dicos. We've got one of those in our city but I've never been there. What food to they do?

Dicos is just like KFC. A little cheaper though. I am not sure if Dicos is a Chinese brand or a brand from another country.
TGI Fridays for wings and ultimate long island iced tea (lots of both).
Paulaner Brauhaus for an artery-clogging feast of meat, bread and anything else that can be fried and covered in butter...and beer
The Golden Elephant in BJ was my favorite place for Indian food.
Niulan Pizza (Korean-style) in GZ made an awesome spicy beef pizza and had Asahi Super Dry on tap.

A lot of places that think they serve Western food yes, local ingredients, local chefs, local quality, but very Western prices.

oh, I'm sorry u can't see the pic. It is of an American hamburger joint that has been very popular for maybe 50+ years. It's called- "In n' Out Burger"
I think it is only in the SouthWest... Nevada, Arizona, Cali....maybe up in Utah too... anyway it started as a true, American drive-in, and they tried to stay true to that over the years. check it out if u get the chance.

Dicos is from taiwan but they make good fried chicken.

Dicos is from Chengdu, although it is now owned by a Taiwanese comapany.
I crave a "FATBURGER" .... a hamburger with a really big chunk of real beef and a nice fresh BUN and whatever else they care to stick in there with it.
I'll take what I can get.
...Unless it's Dico's AKA KFC's low-rent, retarded cousin which I avoid like the plague.
The Kitchen in Shenzhen (Futian, Coco Park).
Bar none the best western food in town. Owned by a San Francisco chef who is diligent about ingredients and obsessed with quality.
Typical of a 4 star restaurant in SF that serves a wide variety....from steaks to French food to nachos and burgers with a huge imported drink list.
I'll go about twice a month and drop about 500 RMB for 2 and it's worth every last penny. The only time I ever feel like I'm at home in China.
KFC is only good for a quick lunch or snack while escaping from the GF....but it still sucks.

Yeah, I'm not big on KFC either. I mean, I'll take it over Dico's but I swear those things are growing faster than the KTVs.

When I go to bigger cities I search for indian food or mexican food.
