Q: What is that white jelly that is served in a Papaya at formal dinners?

At formal dinners now, twice I've been served with white, lumpy jelly in a papaya half. It isn't one of the most disgusting foods, but I have a suspicion now that it is making me sick. Last time I ate it, I developed a sore throat and cough the next day, and it lasted for a week. Now I have the same thing again. Someone at one of the dinners told me it was a Traditional Chinese medicine, so that is just another piece of evidence that it is the cause.

Does anybody know what that is, and whether I should eat it?
