Have you ever seen a Chinese person refuse to eat something that is quite normal for you but was disgusting to them?
The only thing I can think of that basically nobody I know will try is steak cooked rare so there is blood still in it..
Everything else I would expect people to refuse to even try, like blue cheese, or parmeson cheese for example, I have seen people happily try.
wagon:
Ha, I was gonna say the same thing.
Eggs with runny yolk also turns their stomachs, from my experience.Stiggs:
It does make sense, eating semi cooked meat and eggs are a great way to get food poisoned.
Ive never seen Chinese refuse to at least try something but there are plenty of things they dont like. Many dont like cheese. Often chinese people dont like really sweet foods so many deserts. Last Thanksgiving i had a big pumpkin pie and all 7 of the Chinese people thought it was gross. I was super happy to take it all.
maggiegirly:
I like cheese, cheese pizza is one of my favorite .
As for sweet food, i wouldn't say I like it a lot ,but I eat it often.you know ,some sweet food is just so yummy, like tiramisu .......I can hardly say No :(
Garbo:
My in laws are easy. I had a pumpkin pie at thanksgiving dinner and they loved it especially my niece.
Some cannot stand breakfast cereals. I have also come across Chinese that have refused to eat tacos or mashed potatoes.
I met either super conservative Chinese that won't touch anything non familiar, and other curious to try anything.
* There are of cheese with green/blue moisture on it, or revolting smell. It's just psychology, Roquefort cooked and not telling what it is, it goes fine.
* Oysters eaten alive. I remember showing that to my gf, she thought it was gross. It's the only way I know to eat oysters. In my home province, oysters are grown in sea farms, it's part of the regional folklore. So there, it's common to start the meal with oysters when you invite people at home for Sunday lunch. When I saw that people cooked oysters elsewhere, I was like "WTF, who cook oysters ?"
* Raw or undercooked meat and fish. Raw is rare back home, but barbecued beef and duck meat is typically uncooked in the middle. My wife tried raw fish, but she felt it was super weird, while I really love it.
when it comes to non-Chinese food, with the exception of KFC/Mc D's fast food, i have noticed that most of my Chinese friends are very reluctant to try anything new ("foreign")
i have heard so many excuses :
"my stomach is not well", "I don't know what it is"
"I don't like it" - how do you know? You have not even tried it???
i will admit that there are foods i don't eat: dog, snake etc., but I'll give most things a fair chance. That is how i know i really don't like stinky tofu.
bill8899:
I ate snake once. I shot it so I had to do something. It's not bad.
No it does not taste like chicken.
I know two things Chinese men don't eat:
1. Humble Pie
When I say something retarded, I don't mind laughing about it, and acknowledging that I'm an idiot. Chinese men, however, tend not to display humility or a sense of humour after making a fool of themselves. Presumably because they are very knowledgeable about everything and don't make mistakes.
2. P_ _ _ y (If you're a moderator of this site, that word is... peony.)
I've had two very frank conversations about this topic, and apparently this activity simply isn't in the male Chinese lover's repertoire. One of my Chinese friends suggested that young men might try it once or twice because they saw it in a Japanese AV. But then it's back to imposing yourself on a largely inert female for a minute or two, rolling over and going to sleep. The Chinese man's equivalent of foreplay is offering to pay more.
yongge:
You got that right about the "peony" They are always surprised at how much pleasure can be had.
fresh onion,I once tried to eat it ,and I ended up vomiting!!!!
Samsara:
Along with other things, in a sandwich or salad?
Your post made feel a little bit of nostalgia. The fresh onion part, not the vomiting.
My wife says black pudding is disgusting. I love it.
sorrel:
have you not tried the local Chinese 'version'?
just solid blood (i was told it was duck), no spices/seasoning.
i have been served this either in a dish or on its own
give me black pudding any day
laowaigentleman:
@sorrel.
I tried it. Coagulated duck's blood. Nothing like black pudding but it isn't that bad.
Hotwater:
I was in Yunnan last autumn & came across a barbecue stall selling local black pudding. Was similar to UK black pudding though bulked out with rice. Tasted okay but nothing like real Bury black pudding!
Agree with what DrMonkey said. I cook all kinds of food and get told it is too sweet/salty/spicy and they haven't even tried it. They'll eat the twice baked potato that'll have bacon, cheese, and sour cream but not the monkey bread, or chicken pot pie. Made tomato basil soup and looked like they were scared of it. Though the wife's grandma ate a pilaf(rice) dish I made and really liked it. Made some BBQ and was told eating too much will hurt my throat. I made mead and the only one that liked it was the grandpa, though he also makes his own alcohol. Some stuff I think they will eat if it looks familiar like potatoes or rice but too different and it's like NOPE.
hungry enuf and one will eat anything.... just ask Dr. Lecter.
my ex-gf's granpa used to tell us about back in the 'Long March' or whatever days about how he had taken to eating grass and tree-bark. I never forgot how he was just so matter-of-fact about it when he told me stories of back then. He was one of those who got majorly fkd by the system, but survived to tell about it.
Chinese I know won't eat blue cheese because "it's smelling strong" but are always glad to feed themselves some stinky tofu that smells much worse.
I am lucky enough to have a massive Metro supermarket specialized in imports (groceries or else) 5 min from my garden. So I always have some foodstuff from back home or other countries in my fridge.
From what I know Chinese tend to dislike nutella, peanut butter, cheese, raw salmon but they eat pre-cooked meat that's more dangerous, condensed tomato sauce but like ketchup or regular tomato sauce, natto but like stinky tofu that's basically the same thing in blocks, pasta except spaghetti because it's trendy to eat it???. ...
I was told that marble/kobe beef has too much fat although it's considered the best beef and a luxury product in most countries, and although I saw the same people eating those pork cubes served in most restaurants here made up of 50% fat.
I asked my students if Chinese people eat rabbit. I told them Welsh people eat it. They thought the Welsh were crazy.
I've never eaten rabbit by the way.
DrMonkey:
It's great. When I was a kid, we would eat rabbit close to once a week. It's a bit like chicken, with a more delicate taste. There are plenty of recipes for it. A simple one is to just paint the rabbit with mustard and roast it in the oven. Or slowly roasted with lots of green and black olives.
The Cantonese won't eat tables, planes or submarines! Apart from those anything goes!
One of the best snack for hot sunny afternoon we consider:
fresh (still warm) bread, spread with thick layer of lard and cut onion. To it we bite green pepper.
All my Chinese friends find it disgusting...
Another thing they find.disgusting is medium or rare steak ....
Chinese are not too much into experiments what food.concerns
i think sh*t is one of them.
WeiJJ:
You enjoy it?That's weird, we Chinese people don't eat that,I know some dogs are obsessed with it.
Pussy. No, seriously... bear with me... have you ever talked to anyone in China about eating pussy? Both men and women say, "that's disgusting!"
