Q: What will happen to us?
If a war starts between china and japan.............What is the worst case scenario for us expats in china?!!!!...........especially if our countries have a defense treaty with japan.
It is not the Authority's you need to worry about it will be the local Nationalists who will want to do harm to you (Mob Mentality )
I doubt It will not happen overnight so if it starts looking nasty head for the airport
or closest boarder ahead of time
fortunately most surrounding countries are allies of the USA
well except the DPRK .
maybe it is time to brush up on you Russian?
To be honest, in a time like this you should call your embassy and see what they say.
If there would be "bad times" - PSB will warn You (they have Your address) or just escort to nearest embassy or an airport
it there would be any security threat - You can go to nearest PSB office and ask Them to call Your embassy to arrange help
look on Your embassy website - they provide information the kind of: "all ... citizens are advised to leave China asap." or "(...) should immediately leave China or report to nearest embassy"
btw. I'm happy that I'm not US citizen (and my Russian is quite good 
for average Chinese)
first, war will not break out between japan and china. chinese govt knows they are in the wrong. they signed the islands over to japan in 1895 at the end of the first sino- japanese war. and at the end of ww2 the islands were surrendered to the usa. 1970, the usa returned the islands to japan. taiwen / china does have a legitimate grip. because they were not invited to the peace talks in san fran. so they were not allowed to address the issue. which is why japan is preparing to return or sell the islands back to china . the first step was buying the lands from the private owners. (chinese govt whipped the nationals up into a frenzy because they were one step closer to getting what they want, WTF?) if i was japan i would not give the islands back until the chinese govt admits to their chinese people that the chinese govt signed the islands over to japan in 1895 and apologize to all the japanese people who were terrorized and or assaulted.
bottom line is this japan is planning to return or sell the islands back to china. but chinas reputation will never recover from this. and international companies will be forced to rethink staying in china because china is clearly growing more and more unstable. (fewer jobs )
to answer your question. if war broke out between china and any country, book the next flight out with your gf/ wife. if you leave your gf behind they will probably be raped and beaten.

creat: i hope nothing happens to her no matter what. but you have to understand the mindset of the people you are dealing with. those that know she is with a foreigner are extremely jealous. and everyday more and more anger is built up . they believe women are property of chinese men. working in law enforcement adds to it. Its a dispute over the Islands. The battle in theory would happen in the water around the Islands.
If it does escalate.... I think right now you dont need to worry about MObs so much, from either Chinese or Japanese... They hate the Japanese right now, not everyone else... But if any foreign countries ( America!) support Japan or take any action agaisnt China... Run! American or Not... just run

Get out and ask for political asylum for my wife. Realistically though I'd be incredibly surprised if it came to that. I think that China is probably more likely to offer a settlement that involves a great deal of cash and that gives them access to oil that's under the island while allowing Japanese fishermen access to the waters immediately around the island.
The alternative is that they try to take the island by force and hope that the US doesn't intervene. If it does then there is a very good chance that China will lose a lot of what its gained in the last three decades. In a single foreign policy maneuver China could potentially lose a portion of its fleet and air force, its largest trading partner, and an growth rate that exceeds 8%. Worst of all, they may lose the confidence that the Chinese people have in their Government's ability to represent their interests abroad. You can't go about telling people that the 100 years of humiliation they suffered have ended, then go about losing a territorial disputes.
All of that is a great deal to bet on the US not entering into a war. A settlement is likely.
out of the Japan thing for a second what happened with the Philippines and the gripe china had with them early this year?

I am guessing that they take turns. Last year it was Vietnam, then came the Philippines, now it is Japans turn. Kind of like those martial arts movies, where the "bad guys" fight the "good guy" one at a time.
