I have a number of friends finally make the decision to leave China for good this year, and it seems a number of people on this forum have left or are thinking about it. For those that have left, now that you've gone, what do you miss about China? I want to make sure I'm doubly appreciating it all.
well i haven't left china, so i'm not sure if your question applies to me, but screw it. i've made some great friends and absolutely love my girlfriend's family. so, i'd have to say if we (the girlfriend and i) packed up and left, i would miss the friends and family. but on another note, my girlfriend has an amazing job, and i could never ask her to leave it. so i think i'll be here for quite some time.
Not left yet, but I know I will miss
* Reliable supply of Lao Gan Ma sauce. It's kind of my Spice, my Melange.
* Lots of Chinese dishes hard to find abroad eg. Sichuan food
Hum... Yup, that's it.
Hulk:
We buy Lao Gan Ma in bulk on amazon.com
Same with Sichuan spices. Gotta cook them ourselves, though.

If you are from the US [especially California] it is easy to buy in most super markets and not expensive!
DrMonkey:
I'm from France. In Paris, you can find that in the Asian markets, but the supply is irregular. People tends to hoard them. Outside of Paris, good luck to just find *one* freak'in pot.
DrMonkey:
Well, back in the old times, you would go young to Asia, and come back less young with a dragoon tattoo on the back and an opium addiction. Now, it's without the tattoo, but with a wife and a Lao Gan Ma addiction.
I was thinking about it this morning during my boring driving time, while I usually try to isolate from the outside world (which brings my moronosity level sky high) fantasizing about the day I'll leave...... and I did come to the point that there's absolutely NOTHING.
Oh, maybe one thing. Which are not the 10 years I spent here because they're not lost years, but more likely I'll be missing, in a future, the years of my future life I'll lose because of those 10 years.
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!!!! Last time I couldn't wait to get out!!!!!!
Then then, uh... as... time... went... by...
And the voice, I did wield, on that glorious field,
When I, in great China, shuddered with bore!
Mighty Thu'um, like a blade, cut through enemies all,
As the Hulkster issued his roar!
And the Scrolls have foretold, of a hungry man in the cold,
That when bellies wage war come unfurled!
Hulk's stomach, Bane of Kings, ancient shadow unbound,
With a hunger to swallow the world!
Uh, I mean I miss Chinese food. Sorry.
Mostly I will miss my rather large Chinese family. Much of the food here - just cannot ever get in America. Miss my job - I love teaching here. Miss being an accepted member [not just a visitng lao wai] of several gong fu and tai ji groups.
Have been China for 5 years. Go home every year and within a short time miss China again, then come back.
So many memories, so many sweet Chinese guys, lots of nagging Chinese lady friends, the vagaries of the weather, the ying-and-yang of politeness, the lack of customer service in some cases, the surfait of it in others, the ability to have wonderful made-to-order 1,000% fake Chanel suits that look better than the originals, for les than RMB 1,000. And so forth and so on.
Nothing, because I don't plan to leave, so I never think that far ahead.( Nice line from Con Air: Cyrus the Virus: I never think that far ahead.)
i would miss buying booze at night. at home its illegal
I love the downtown area of Guilin, wide sidewalks, coloured lights on bridges, lighted signs, and the green topical vegetation all year. Home looks like nuclear winter 7 months of the year. I love that people are out late at night, my sidewalks at home roll up at 6pm, I can't buy gas locally after 10pm. I love the long hot weather, hate the cold rainy season. I like that everyone looks Chinese, yes that was the first thing I noticed in China, but actually seeing it was really different. I see mixed people at home but mostly caucasians. I miss hearing women speaking English with a Chinese accent and the Chinglish...''Do you want sleeping?'' I miss the women most of all. I'm in treed hog heaven now and it's freezing outside, so I'm staying indoors until I get a flight out of here in 2 months. Next stop is Philippines. I plan on becoming the King of one of the head hunter tribes on a North island. Live in a grass hut on the beach. Ritual sacrifices, can't wait. I'm not holding my breathe for any virgins.
I am not in China now.I do miss something there, like the delicious food,my family and my friends.

Please come back. Leave your place to somebody else. Oh, forgot to mention: food here sucks.
Well I probably won't be leaving for a while. But right now I won't miss anything except the night life. I play it safe so never ran into trouble. Since I'm black I can disappear into the inner club without being pursued. Other than that nothing. Because being sick and black mailed at the same time is ridiculous.
