Q: What would you say are the big differences between Taiwan and the mainland?
Heading to Taiwan for a vacation soon. Haven't been before but some people I know have and they said it felt very different but they couldn't explain way. Anyone been? Can you give me a more definitive answer? Need to prep myself, as from what people say I'll want to move there, as soon as my feet touch tarmac.
I am sorry for the people you've talked to, they must be blind, deaf and be a bit slow. Taiwan is a functional society. Imagine China where people wear bike helmets and put lights on their bikes at night, cars don't accelerate towards soft targets, restaurants don't offer a cheap plastic bucket for you to poor the tea used to rinse utensils into. Taiwan is way more civilized. Chinas Chineseness is unique to China.

Let's seal the deal: Some taxi drivers speak perfect English, not just "yes Mr.", "that will be special tourist price" but "Did you enjoy your visit to Taipei 101, maybe you would also enjoy seeing... blah blah blah"
I'm from Taiwan. People there are Chinese, too, but different in some ways. Most of the mainland Chinese tourists expected to see modernized views of cities for their trips to Taiwan and eventually were disappointed because they found that Taiwan(Taipei and all the other cities) didn't look as ADVANCED as the other China's major cities. Since you are a foreigner, I assume you will take your vacation in a different way from that of mainland Chinese tourists.
Here are things you would see in Taiwan: People don't litter, they would keep their wastes till they find a trash bin. They don't spit on the streets. they don't jump a queue while waiting and driving. In the cases who shows his enthusiasm and warmness toward strangers isn't necessarily a scamer, most of them just want to help. Foods in night markets are reliably clean and tasty and price-worthy. Cities can be boring, the best places to be are in the mountains, on the beaches and on some of the smaller islands.

I really don't know much about the teaching jobs there,sorry...... I guess someone with that experience would be much helpful than I am. All I know is that there're language schools everywhere saying that they have qualified native speakers teaching at their schools. Taipei is the capital of Taiwan with a population up to 10 millions people including New Taipei city (was once its surrounding cities). The living cost is similar to Shanghai or maybe a bit lower. Taichung, Kaosiung,Tainan and several smaller cities like Taoyuan,Shinhsu,Pindong and Hualian are options if you are looking for somewhere quieter with a lower living cost. You will find out that most people are always friendly and willing to help.
Taiwan is China without all the bulls**t.
As far as working there - it's much more difficult to find work. I was staying with English people while travelling there. One of them moved to Shanghai because he couldn't find a job after one month. This was in Tainan though, not sure about Taipei. Non-native speakers - only kindergarten possible. So no, thanx.
