We have a coworker and his story shocked us:
He's American, not married in America, but he told us his story:
Q: So do you have a girlfriend in China?
A: No, I just got married.
R: Wow congrads
Q: So how is, marriage life?
A: That same as my 3 other marriages in Asia..
Q: What?
A: Yeah, I'm married in Japan, and Indonesia as we speak.
Q: How could you legally do that?
A: As long as the marriage isn't registered in American this it's no problem.
Q: How do you keep getting single certificates?
A: Easy, like I said, I'm not registered as married in the U.S or Embassy. Only in those countries computer.
My god, we lost respect for him that night. Is that really true?
It doesn't seem possible, but after I read in deeper detail it seems it is. I guess thats why Hong Kong guys have a Hong Kong wife and a Chinese Wife.

Who in their right mind would want more than one wife
ironman510:
He said he did it for passport purposes in Japan.. a real sick guy.
ambivalentmace:
if the girl knows all about it and its arrangement, its fine, need more detail, many people marry for a passport as an arrangement. if both parties agree, no problem.
hell any foreign lady want a us passport, if your country does not charge income tax for income earned out of the country, we can have an arrangement right now.
sorrel:
i wouldn't want an Us passport - i'm happy with the one i have. (BTW, i don't have to pay tax at home when working abroad )
Fair play, what is marriage anyway? The majority end in divorce.
To my mind it is a farce, especially as most people treat it as a business.
Scandinavian:
aaaawwww. someone is waiting for the knight in shining armor.
well, every system has its flaws, including the international marriage system. but i don't think you are asking the right question ironman510... i think the real question is how, if he does, support three wives?
ironman510:
That would be expensive, I guess my real question was is how does the U.S embassy not know about this? Is it really because he isn't legally married in the U.S? How could he fool the whole system.
marriages are not on a national data base in america, usually by county and the counties dont have a central state record,
that being said, how could we track marriage of americans around the world, simply impossible, most people get caught when they deal with paperwork, file a joint tax return instead of single, life insurance for more than one spouse, claiming benefits for 2 families,if you pay cash and dont create a paper trail, you could have quite a few, hope they have money or you will be broke.
hell we cant even run a website for health insurance. lol
ironman510:
haha yeah Obama care has been a laughing stock. I'm from New York and we need Change, haha Change my a**. I've given up that any president will ever change America again.
Back to the topic, yeah it's just insane. He showed us his pictures just an hour ago. I remained speechless. I just said: ah wow.
At least in China, you need to prove you're not married already to get married. That's the theory, I did not game the system to see if they actually check the formal proof that you're not married yet.
ironman510:
He did the same thing, but again, he's not registered in America as married and he married here in China, he got his single cert in Guangzhou to prove he's single in America. So checking is worthless.
ambivalentmace:
the certificate is just an document you sign that swears your single and you have to give your divorce date for your last marriage, nothing is checked, they just stamp it and take your money at the embassy. they probably sit in a file somewhere and never looked again.
as far as I know. my Korean friend married a Chinese girl in the uk . And he told me if u registered in the uk the Chinese government won't approve that . so basically u can get married in the uk and then in china again with different person I guess
*rubs palms together greedly*
Thanks for the information. I'm off to Tokyo, Seoul, and Hanoi!
