Granted, I have not undertaken a scientific analysis of the situation, but just offhand it seems like a disproportionately large percentage of the younger population here wear eyeglasses. wtf is up with that ?
I thought evolution would give us good eyesight; not bad !
These peeps are making spectacles of themselves !
Granted, I have done no scientific research either, but I would say diet and genes do play a role in poor eyesight in China. Another pet theory of mine is that a poor diet is giving many of them anemia, and many live all their lives with it without realizing they have it.

i would love to do an experiment. 10000 random chinese people. 5000, all their reading material is enlarged (and in well lit rooms). and the other 5000 live normal lives. i am willing to bet it would not be due to genetics, but i do agree with the diet. chinese people do not know anything about maintaining a good nutritious diet.
A significant number of those glasses just have plain glass, or no glass at all, i.e. they are fashion accessories. The wearing of glasses has become fashionable, and 4 years ago I spent £3000 getting laser eye surgery! Go figure.

yeah, those lensless glass frames a lot of the girls wear is one fashion accessory I never thought I would 'see'. Well, I guess there have been many odd fashions over the years.... mohawk haircut comes to mind....
try reading small characters your whole life or try reading traditional characters on the computer, constantly having your head in a book in that case, im guessing that cant be so good at a young age
if u observe more... u will find that girls/boys in university have higher proportion of myopia compared to drop outs...
My understanding is that its directly proportional to how much u study ... and ofcourse the way they study... read book read book read book...
Now a days LASIK is getting very common in china... my wife did SMILE LASIK last week... quite good... even though its still not approved in many countries.. i find it low risk and painless...
I didn't notice many wearing glasses, but I never look up that high usually.
