Q: What's with all these crazy extravagant weddings?
I've seen that Chinese weddings are mental... singers, dancers, thousands of RMB spent on photographers, clothes, parties.... is it all for show/face? What about real love?
One word...face.
And as Tina Turner will tell you, "What's love got to do with it?"
For me and the wife, tying the knot was as extravagant as a few bottles of beer; it cost 10 yuan and we celebrated.........ooh, with a few bottles of beer if I remember rightly.
My wedding (approaching 9 years ago) cost me 6000 RMB, (well the reception did) and we got 8000 in the Hongbao.
I do remember though that after the wedding we were so hungry as we hadn't had time to eat anything for doing all the toasting (with water) and stuff, that we went for a street bbq. So in 20 years time when my daughter asks me "What did you do on your wedding night?" I can honestly answer "We went for a bbq my dear, and it was in a car park with several hundred total strangers."

(Lol) What kid asks "What did you do on your wedding night Dad?" That would just be plain weird. "Where'd you go on your honeymoon?" ok, sure, but if my boy ever asks me what I did on my wedding night, i'm going to say "I f***** your mother up the a*** you nosey b******, now shut up and eat your Cornflakes."

Ahem, I asked my parents what they did on their wedding day before! I thought it was interesting to learn what their wedding in the early 80s was like.
I thought here in China you pay for the wedding and invite the guests and all the guests will give you a red envelope with some money in it. I guess it's sort of like repaying the people that threw the party. So, if you invite enough people you could probably receive most of your money back.
Not sure what you mean by extravagant with singers, dancers and clothes.....that's just a given. You can't have a party without a little dancing and singing now can you. Oh and the clothes you need to keep that on. The clothes come off after the party!!
The horrible part of the Chinese weddings is what goes on before the motorcade. The groom has to beg for being let into the brides and have to complete some childrens games run by the bridesmaids to win over the bride.
