Q: What's the average cost of living in Shanghai... modestly, not luxuriously?

Would 10,000rmb be livable?

OK, let's take it from my own humble, meek and modest experience... renting an apartment with 1 bedroom - (in rmb) = 2,000K/month; utilities = 150rmb (i dont stay much in the house); groceries, i do it weekly =  200/week, daily expense when going to work+fare (i take bus and subway) = 20/day (20x 22/21 working days); hang out with friends (depends on where u go, what u'd do and how often u'd do it in a month) = 100 - 200 (incldg taxi); mobile top-up = 100/month; misc = 200/month

in average, i spend 4k - 5krmb/month

so if u allot 10K/month then u're well-off Smile

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
