Yeah, looks like bamboo.  Actually those are the preserved bones of foreigners that ask too many questions.  You have been warned...

Whatever works bamboo is much stronger they could always use it if someone tries to attack them...the one's I've seen in the big city are HUGE!!

philbravery:

Is this a attempt at humor? if so not a bad start but you could of put some more thought into it like

it  is how the Chinese brush things under the carpet

or they watch to much Harry Potter

have another go at it but try to think sarcastically

humour example #3) : If they get into trouble, they can light the broom to signal and they will be seen from miles away.

It's a concrete example of Chinese wisdom we should all be glad to see. Bamboo has the tactile strength of steel, but has the texture of wood element you can feel in your hand and skeletal structure.

Well they are really big and they sweep large areas, also they are cheap, 50 brooms like that sell for 1 RMB.

Actually, these work quite well for what they are designed to do. Sweep streets. I wouldn't use one in my apartment of course, but for street cleaning, they're cheap, eco-friendly, and most importantly, people won't steal them.

If they used high quality push brooms, they'd be gone as soon as the street cleaner went to the bathroom or had a bite to eat.

Those brushes are great! Way better than plastic ones and more environmentally friendly too. The only downside with them is that sometimes they leave behind a trail of "brush parts".
