I want to dispel all the myths that suggest Chinese beer is rubbish and ask you guys what's the best beer you've had in China? Obviously Tsingtao is the main brew has made it on the international stage, though one thing I like about China is that each city has their own local brew.
Tsingtao aside - I've also enjoyed Dali (Yunnan), as well as Liquan (Guangxi).
You kinda left yourself open on this one. Best beer I've had was a Guinness draft. We've got a couple Irish-style pubs here in Ningbo to choose from.
Now, the best Chinese beer I've had in China would have to be Tsingtao Stout. Runners up would be those weird Pineapple and Orange flavored beers, haha.
I agree with BHGAL. Harbin is the best beer I have had in China. Snow beer is also OK but they both make many different varieties with some of those far better than the others.
Tsingtao AT the brewery. As for not at the brewery, Laoshan
Er... given your follow-up comments, your question really ought to have been about the best Chinese beer.
The best beer I had in China was a lovely American craft pale ale which cost me an arm and a leg - especially as I accidentally ordered it for everyone when it was my round for four people. Ouch, but it was worth it.
The best local beer I had was Xinjiang Black, and a lovely beer it was. I always thought that the city's main beer (Wusu, owned by Carlsberg) was cracking value - very drinkable and cheaper than water.
Tsingtao is rubbish.
To me LaoShan is Good...........Cheaper than those so called better ones but actually it's the best.........Cheers
Question re-phrasal - Best Chinese beer. That's what I originally meant! And yes I also agree that there are others out there better than Tsingtao. Now, if were going to go on the worst Chinese beer... I've got a few contenders. My trip in Beijing last year allowed to me experience the wonders of Yanjing....
My favourite Chinese beer is Harbin, but as almost all beers I've come across are 3.6% ABV I'll take whatever comes in cheapest.
I've sampled a few. I'm down with Harbin. Bottoms up!
Of the many beers I've had in China, the best is Anchor Red Crown on Hainan Island. Much better than any I have had on the mainland,
Sam Adams, when they still had it available.
This question is like "Which Budweiser is better: Bud regular, Bud Light, or Bud Ice?"
Nessquick:
Best is the original one, of course. Budvar from Ceske Budejovice / Czech republic.
Snow and Qingdao are not bad.
mArtiAn:
Do you mean together? Because that would turn the snow yellow, and i've heard tell that eating yellow snow is a no no.
chenhan:
no,i have never mixed them together, maybe you can try first,if it tastes good, come back to tell me.
Imported Hoegarden! On a more serious note however, I think Harbin beer is okay.
Imported draft Carlsberg in Shenzhen' Window of the World 3 years ago :(
I was at the airport the other day and bought a small brown colored bottle of Tsingtao.
It cost me more than the average brew here in China (and being at the airport did not help) but at 25 rmb it was truly worth it. I was amazed at how good it was. Maybe not so surprised as I know that Tsingtao is a company that was founded by German brewers a long time ago. No surprise there.
However, I always buy my beer at local major supermarkets that cater to foreigners and have found outstanding German brew on the shelves at really good prices. At 38 rmb for a 4 pack of German brew, the real good stuff. That is a bargain.
At one super market they were selling the same deal for 43 rmb.
So look around and find the spots! There are deals are there that are truly worth it.
Chin chin!!
there is a new beer from tibet , green barley , showing up in shandong , also served on the d and g train from beijing, its quite good compared to others. easy to recognize in the green can and green label for the bottle. cheers
Carlsberg, probably the best beer in the world
cooter:
I'm gonna have to agree with nevermind. I tried Carlsberg once...never again.
Tsingtao is undrinkable. You'd think such an old civilisation would have learnt how to brew beer by now, but no. My Chinese wife says its because men prefer to drink the clear stuff which tastes like rocket fuel. Finding an Irish pub is like a port in a storm in China
I don't actually think Qingdao is that bad. Of course there are varying qualities - only the small bottles (10 RMB in shops, 20 RMB in bars) are worth drinking. the 3 RMB big bottles you get at stands - don't touch those with a bargepole. We all know Chinese beer is light/weak compared to what we're used to back home, and I'd choose a Budvar or a Staropramen over anything else, but on a hot sticky summers day Qingdao does the job well enough.
