Q: What's the best place to live in Shanghai with a 10k salary?

Thinking about moving and wondering what people think are the top spots with an average (to low) salary.

I would advice you Songjiang, it's still quite cheap or anywhere near the metro line 9. Pudong, you can forget it, except if you leave in places with no foreigners around.

You should most definitely look for a room in an apartment that already has other people in it. It's less expensive and it's your best bet for finding a place where you can pay monthly instead of 3 months at a time.

My roommate has another apartment with an empty master bedroom with it's own bathroom in it. It's in Jing'an (the center of town). Rent is 3200/mo  but you pay monthly, not 3 months at a time. The other roommates are foreigners/speak English. If you're interested, inbox me. Otherwise good luck!

Before you judge someone walk a mile in their shoes, that way you're a mile away and you have their shoes!

yes Songjang is somewhat cheaper. I have found nice 2-3 bedroom apartments starting at 2500-3200 rmb per month. yes you would need a 3 month rent in advance and a 1 month rent as a secuity deposit, and pay the agent 34% of 1 months rent.

It's all about either how important it is for you to save money or how important living downtown or near downtown is to you. You can live in Yangpu or Hongkou for a good price. I'm making  9,000 and living comfortably in Yangpu. The further away you are from downtown the cheaper it will be and the more money uoiu will save.

in your case there is NO top spot...

i would say it depends on your work location. simply advising songjiang is stupid if he got his work somewhere in pudong, because that might take u 2 hours one way for travelling every day.

if you are in north puxi, try around Daning (metro yanchang rd or shanghai circus world, line 1). cheaper there but still a few laowai, mainly from shanghai university. got a nice shopping area, even a blue frog outlet.

if u still want a good location, find a shared apartment. maybe even share with chinese people. my friend did so while doing his internship here and he found a room in downtown xujiahui for 2200rmb... he even had an own small bathroom or toilet if i remember correctly. if u dont mind^^

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
