Q: what's the best remedy for a Beijing cough?
Apart from leaving, a good air-mask and a indoor air cleaner... probably a shot of vodka wouldn't make it worse

if you are not the alcohol type, something like sliced ginger-root in hot water is helpful to ease a dry throat, short of the suggestions above which are all good.
Keep your throat moistened and breath through your nose if you can when you are outside. I know the smells might prove a challenge, but your nose is designed to filter particles in the air (theoretically)

probably any liquid will do, maybe with the exception of caffeinated or alcoholic drinks. You don't keep your throat moist by pouring liquid through it (that would be a Chinasism), you keep it moist by making sure the entire body is sufficiently hydrated so the mucusas can do their magic.
I was once given a nice "soup" made by my Chinese friends for cough (I was coughing really a lot). Simple, easy and efficient:
- Cut a few pear-apples into pieces (you can buy this fruit everywhere, it resembles a pear and an apple, 2 in 1);
- Put the fruit in a pot, add water and a type of sugar that comes in a form of candy (solid sugar);
- Let it boil and cook until the fruit gets really soft. Drink it/Eat it while it's still hot
And it's ready. Fast and pleasant to have.

I've had that a few times. Not as a remedy though! It's rather nice.

It also works as a natural remedy. At least, it worked for me!

I've had sliced pear boiled in red wine a couple of times. Needs to be a more fruity wine though. Not sure if it's good for anything.
