Within CHina ? Plane can be cheap for long distances, but reaching the airport and dealing with almost-everytime-late flights is a problem. Fast trains are great, comfortable always on time and fast enough for most purpose. Bikes are very cheap.

cheap and comfortable is not such a great thing in china, safe would be a better option,

sleepy drivers and natural gas tanks on buses make a heated accident were you literally might wake up in a burning hell before you were supposed to be in hell. flying planes in cold climates of china can cause some incidents from time to time, after the one screwup with the trains, they seem to have gotten their act together with trains, let's hope it continues, there is nothing safe about a bike or car in china for travel, but body count is large, so its just collateral damage in the scheme of things, and you might be road kill  for the few birds immune to pollution before a human touches you, but they will take photos of you for posterity.

bus is the cheapest and depending on your leg length can be OK for 5-6 hours.

fast train is great and reasonable money and comfort

slow train is cheap and often very very uncomfortable and irritating

planes are fast, departures are slow, arrivals are maybe.... airports are not fun.

there is no answer to this stupid question!!!!!

Cheekbones and hormones, your only self-defense
Lying through dinner and your rock and roll teeth again
You've harbored a coward and fed him full of broth
This nocturnal sadness, leave you pale as this tablecloth

Careful, don't you spill your dinner
That would be a good defense
Then you wouldn't have to sit here
On the fence

Nobody said about the price for a bus ticket:(Or underground.

icnif77:

1 or 2 yuan in the city.

Last year I returned from Shenzhen to Fuzhou (some 800 km) with coach for some 400 Rmb or so. I landed on the 1st bed by the driver with front view.

They were convincing me, that bed is occupied, and I should move, but I was keep telling them 'no ming bai', and they had to 'postponed moving me to the bed in the back of the coach'.

1 1-ders if 1 is truly a moron or whether 1 might be taking the piss with another 1.

Should 1 indeed a moron be, then 1 may take 1 bus in 1 direction and 1 would make 1 payment of 2rmb(damn). As to 1 being comfortable, 1 may assume that another 1 will have no choice other than to make 1's self as comfortable as 1 may be in 1's circumstances whilst 1 is 1-dering if 1 would have been a smarter 1 if 1 had stayed in 1's mums basement playing 1's xbox.

Hmm, 1 1-ders, 1 does.

Personally, I like sleeper trains. Hard sleepers are cheap, but you have to deal with noise and the third bunk situation sometimes. Soft sleepers are more comfortable. Fast trains are awesome. Especially for short trips.
