Q: What's the best way to handle someone e-bullying you on this website?

I asked a question that was a bit touchy, didn't want to share much detail because I wanted to keep my anonymity. I was very close to responding to all these people but I felt it wasn't worth it.
Was I wrong?

Just ignore. The good thing about e-bullying is that your computer has an off button, as opposed to the bully beating you up behind the school for your lunch money.

Just ignore it is the best way to go..  They spent some time writing whatever it is they wrote and not even bothering to read it is the best revenge.

A lot of people that don't have much experience with forums will try to reply to any and all trolls / cyberbullying and it quickly degrades into a poo flinging contest.  I've already seen it happen numerous times on this forum and it just makes me shrug when I see people take things so personally..

I used to be a moderator of a forum where I had the pleasure of cleaning up all the poo and playing whack-a-mole with the repeat offenders using a ban-stick. Needless to say, it's a lot of exhausting work that could have been avoided if some people just ignored a few posts once in a while..

Admin has cleaned that question up a bit now, and got rid of some of the hysterical comments, like killing people and branding those that disagree with certain ridiculous opinions as pedophiles.

At first glance, your question looked like another wumao post. Wumaos are paid by the government to spread anti-foreigner propaganda on forums. There has been a lot ofsuch questions recently. Silva, for example, is paid by the CCP to disgaree with anything a foreigner says, and is just part of the furniture. I apologise if I came across defensively at first.

Others will just argue and attack the opinions of everybody on the board, usually without any rational argument, and then accuse everybody else of having no rationality.

Still others will deliberately or stupidly give you advice that will create trouble for you.

You were right not to respond. These people will provoke argument, and then complain if you retaliate. To make you look like the bad person.

The best advice I can give you is to look back over the answers posters have given on other threads, and see how sound or rational they are. Then form an opinion on the soundness of their advice.

At first I tried to respond with similar cynical comments, but it obviously didn't work. Then I tried to be nice, and it seems like it's working so far. crimochina hasn't been harrassing me for 1 or 2 days. He'll probably just stalk me around and downvote my posts. Just remember that bullies actually act this way because they are too bitter with themselves or their life. Or you could directly report to the Admin.

Traveler:

Many of your questions, particularly when you first started posting, were very inciteful and aggressive. If people respond to that in the same way, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Just forget about the bullies they are losers anyways...if someone has time to bully you they are probably low life's! Just kill them with kindness and make them pee in their pants by blowing their mind a bit on how nice you can be to someone that mean!

I made the mistake of asking for some advice on Chinese women in the relationships tab. What followed was a barrage of insults and slander from a few people. One went as far as calling me a "pedo". I made the mistake of replying to their petty and insignificant comments. In hindsight I should have kept my mouth shut and not retorted to their level at all.

At the end of the day, they are just trolls who use the internet to hide their true selves. probably because they know that if they spoke like that to someone in person, then they may very well find their heads getting smashed in by those around them. I personally do not condone violence in any shape or form. But every now and again, I can not help but hope that their time will soon come that they piss the wrong person off.

All in all Rock B. Just ignore them as best as you can. What can they really do to harm you? It is after all the internet, and we are not going to get along with EVERYONE we meet online or off.

For users who have joined this forum more recently, I think many of us have encountered similar confrontations, where we ask seemingly innocent questions that the long-term users have seen dozens of times before and have preconceived notions about.

You make the mistake of asking a question or two in a row like "Why do foreigners who complain about China live here still?" or "How can I work on a student visa?" and you're automatically judged to be a "wumao". I asked a question a few weeks back (innocent I thought) about parking garages here and people gave me shit for it. Apparently wumaos are all about hijacking boards with questions about urban planning, eh?

Anyway, it's a tough situation to deal with on both sides I think. For the long-term group (of which I guess I'm slowly becoming a part of), it's pretty exhausting to see the same basic questions asked every few weeks. For the new users asking these questions (and with honest intentions), the scolding that they receive is certainly not sending a positive message of "welcome to the community!". But I believe that this phenomenon  is found on every forum, as well as in most walks of life probably.

I'll get off my soapbox in a second, but I'd just like to say that I try not to be confrontational with other users, new or old, on this board. If I don't like a question that someone asked, I just ignore it. If I don't like an answer someone gives, I down vote it or report it. Yes the trolls are annoying, but it's the internet, and they thrive on the anonymity of it. Better to respect most people than to go after the few jerks in my mind.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
