I thought this was the custom to make a big deal and modestly try to refuse, but I haven't seen this.

It is best to approach the giver in private and in person. Thank the giver for their thoughtfulness taking care not to embarrass them. and just say you can't accept the gift. You don't have to say why.

Why turn it down? Just say, "thanks." Accepting a gift doesn't beholden you to anyone. It's a gift. Who cares what someone else considers it.

accept it, no big deal, you are in china.  I went to my american friend' birthday last month , I didn't know what to get for him so I asked some friends and looked up online, they told me it will make them feel uncomfortable if i buythem expensive gift.  So I just bought him a birthday card which is really hard to find, I had to go to an import store to find one.  He was very happy about it though.

But if u did accept it,  next time you should get sth nice for your friend too.
