Q: What's the big deal with carrying on family names?
I know that when I die, my family name is going to carry on whether or not I have a boy child, and my family name isn't that common. Who gives a shit?
But these Chinese, do they really think we're gonna run out of Wangs and Zhangs? Really?

Because the family name has the personal connection to the individual. We don't care about the idea of the would not having the last name "Smith"... it's about the feeling that you can claim something of yours will last on past mortality and potentially be meaningful. It potential the only lasting mark many individual families can see as being within their grasp.
