Q: What's the deal with Parkview Green (芳草地)?

So I went to Parkview Green to check out the so-called "biggest American Apparel store in the world", which was in fact open, but NOTHING ELSE WAS. It was like a ghost town, and the staff at AA just said nothing else is open yet, so I assumed this was a new mall or something, but I looked it up and apparently the building's been up for a whole year.... Totally cool space, awesome art installations, but almost totally dead and it smells like paint. Anyone know what the deal is or when it's going to *actually* open (their website suuuucks).

If you are talking about this Parkview Green, and not the other retailer in Beijing that shares the same name, then there are several reasons:

1.  The location.  They built a world class building in a working-class neighborhood and they thought that the building would change the neighborhood.  It didn't.

2.  The economy.  The Chinese economy has cooled and this is one of the signs.  Real estate suffered first.

3.  The lack of a model  - they build first and the will come attitude.  There are no current projection dates for when and if this will ever reach fruition.   It was speculation to a certain degree.

whoa, thanks for the thorough answer! too bad, cause it's a pretty cool space. you don't think that area is high-class enough? it's right across from THE Plaza with that huge led display and that seems to do okay...
