Q: What's the difference between the old Emperor system & today's 'modern China' ??
Can anyone tell me any signicant differences between the old system & the 'new one'?
I know it may be a tad sensitive, but after living here for some years, I can't see any really important divergences e.g. power/wealth distribution, biased/controlled legal system,totally controlled censorship & pervasive brainwashing etc.
I know the locals have a few more rmb in their pockets...but at what price?
Reckon you would need to have been here for at least 120 years to make a realistic comparison between then and now.

Who can really tell what it was like here 120 years ago? How would you really know what it was like for the common bloke in the street or the field unless you were here at the time, or had a first hand account from someone who was?
All we have is the official history.

I actually enjoy reading books on China written 100-300 years ago by either scholars or just travelers. You can find many of those on the Open Library website, it's all free and very very instructive.
From what I read, society was more peaceful back then, but some traits they had were exactly the same, for example the compulsive need to prefer a lie to the truth even when it doesn't make a difference.
To answer your last question, they have few more RMB at the cost of having anihilated the nature sourrounding them. Sadly the backlash will probably be much more costly.
