Q: What's the dominant foreign supermarket chain in China?

Carrefour? Walmart? Tesco?

Any numbers would be appreciated

according to wikipedia, it was carrefour until 2008, and RT-mart since

george:

RT-Mart in Chinese is called 大润发, quite popular in southern cities or some 2nd tier and 3rd tier cities in China.

Where I live in Shenyang it would be carrefour. One of the big differences from Australia is the range of what is sold in a supermarket.

Jingkelong is probably one of the biggest domestic supermarkets. Carrefour and Walmart are huge too.

By the way, I don't know if it's the whole Tesco chain policy or if it's just a local practice, but I've been twice to the one on Zhongshan Lu in GZ and bought some discounted products only to find out that they charge you the regular price... After complaining both times, the employee (each time a different one) pretended to phone someone for confirmation and invariably replied "you must have made a mistake, it's the correct price".

Just check your bills before to exit the shop... If the price doesn't suit you, you can get a refund.
