I'm doing private lessons with a beginner adult who has literally no English. I am wondering what a good English textbook (and possibly phonics book) would be for my student?
And also a good place in Shanghai to find it

Id direct you to the titles produced by Cambridge. I've always been impressed by the high quality product they produce. While no book is perfect, I've been happy with the level of energy and thought that goes into their books. They are Chinglish free and well edited.
Jesus, being you are "more educated than the majority of Caucasians here (and Chinese for that matter)", I figured you could figure that out on your own... I use Longman which can be bought in any bookstore in Shanghai... or is this a test for us "less educated" types?

Education is no substitution for experience, which surely you know. Every website is going to say their book is the best. I wanted to know what actual people who have had to use them think. So I'll ignore your asinine intro and focus on the helpful portion of your comment. Thanks!

Wait a minute.... So you're saying you're book smart and inexperienced? No need to call me names I'm not asinineded or whatever that fancy word is you're calling me!

Yes, I am inexperienced in selecting an ESL book for an adult beginner with no English ability. Hence the question....
hehe aahhhh what i would do in that situation is ahhhh just go over words and mmmm just teach them how to pronounce the word without going into phonics.
because the rules of phonics are not followed same with the rules of grammar
i think teaches phonics causes more confusement (patented word ) because when they come across words that do not following the same pronounciation it will make their heads explode because you cant teach the students hear when to apply rules and when to not apply rules, their brains cant handle that because of the education system
i hope this makes sense i am too drunk (and cat: saying i post while intoxicated is not racist offensive, etc )
just tell them how educated you are and how lucky they are having you as there teacher, should last first 6 or 7 lessons
