Q: What's the hype regarding Chinese MMO's?
I know China has a big market share of it, and that the drudgery of life in China makes MMO's that much more appealing. Chinese culture is such that many Chinese consumers won't touch Western products unless they have been properly "Sino-fied" or given "Chinese characteristics" (you haven't really watched Breaking Bad unless you watch it with Chinese subtitles).
That said, I don't get this interest for Chinese MMO's. Chinese culture only allows for two periods to be used in popular culture: historic (all eras) and WWII Japanese imperialism. This make available subjects for MMO's (and everything else) very dull and dry. I love the Three Kingdoms era as much as the next guy, but I've already played a kick-ass video game about it - Dynasty Warriors.
Moving on, the graphics are always several generations behind as are gameplay features; it's as though if you wanted to know the state of Chinese gaming years from now, you can just look at whatever Blizzard is doing with WoW.
I understand that China is trying to use its "freemium" pay model with which they effectively broke all of video games for everyone... but why would anyone want to play crap, let alone crap that is free?

It's an escape from reality.

Chinese MMOs are made to suit Chinese audiences: click, boom, click, boom, watch phallic explosion effects, loot sexier/cuter dress for female character, start over.
It needs to:
- Be repetitive, with no real learning curve and evolution because anyway you won't have a storyline or any kind of fulfilling goal to achieve, just endless statistics to improve
- Have female characters with as little clothing as censorship will allow.
- Don't require any sort of thinking or solution finding
- Run on cybercafés low-end machines
That's how Blizzard got successful in China, by making sophisticated content only an option that can be ignored.
Argh, never ever seen somebody playing Minecraft here, the MMO with genuine chunks fun and imagination inside.
