Q: What's the logic behind continuously blocking facebook?

You've got so many other social network sites nowadays that aren't blocked so why are they solely picking on facebook? Is it because they want to block out foreign competition and boost Chinese brand sites?

The logic is this: FB is the LARGEST social network in the world. In North Africa and Iran and...perhaps in Xingjiang also, people used it to organize large scale protests, etc. You got it?

It's not just that. I'm convinced there's a money factor in there somewhere...

I mean you like at Renren, you like at Sina Weibo (the Chinese Twitter), and is it really that surprising that the American platforms are blocked? It's like reserving the entire Chinese market for Chinese products.

And now you look at Weibo trying to open up in English - it's all a money game.

According to American Press, there have been some protests in Beijing, but they got quelled quickly. With FB, everybody would have known. Without FB and media control, everybody is clueless, and won't try to pursue rallying...

All social networks are a threat.

In times of crisis even the mobile phone network is shut down.

When Tibet and Urumqi problems broke out all mobile and internet services in those areas were cut off.

For the same reasons the Arab Awakening spread so fast.

I think Martin is right.

I don't really think it's a money thing. I mean, you look at Sina Weibo - the government's very worried about them, not trying to help them.

Of course, if they can encourage domestic companies, they will, but I think the principal aim is really political
