Q: What's the monthly salary of a Chinese monk?

Didn't you ever wonder how much they get paid? I mean, most of them have the latest phones and e-gadgets; but I guess at the same time they don't spend money on clothing, accommodation or expensive Chinese girlfriends (couldn't help it!).

They dont get paid. Its through donations from the public and the souviner shops inside the temples. Ever see people throw money into the well? Every couple of months they collect the coins and give to the monks.

Apart from donations, monks earn a lot by reading palms, answering lots.Besides, just selling  incenses could bring temples large sums of money per day.If there are shops and restaurants in the temples, they will pull in more.

A temple in the mountain near my apartment earns much more than a moderate supermarket.I don't believe monks there at all, they are too greedy. They are more like business men rather than monks.

Mr_spoon:

I've been studying Chinese history in class, and one of the things that were learnt about recently was the economy of Chinese temples.

Apparently, Chinese monks have a history of being greedy, which is why emperor TaiWu of Northern Wei had them slaughtered and kicked out of the land at some point.
