Is there an onomatopoeia that just annoys you? There are many places to hear different sounds and some can be pleasant and some can be annoying. What's the most annoying sound you've heard in China?
I once heard someone say "mattaya" it sounded like nails on a chalkboard
DaBen:
Just to let you know, DaBen comes from 大笨蛋, so trying to insult me takes a little more than just making fun of my name ;)
HugAPanda:
Michael Thomas, your insults are on a third grade level. And that's being generous.
The load kwaaaaak ... ptuuuui sound the Beijingrens make before they spit. I cringe everytime I hear that. You see spit on the side walk everywhere. Yucks! Disgusting!
awazeer:
yes, yes ... this is the most disgusting annoying sound.... specially while eating outside !!!!!! yaaaaaaaaaakh
crimochina:
i especially love to hear it in restaurants while i'm eating
The load horking sound before a spit....drives me nuts...its almost as bad as what DaBen talked about up there.
Some sounds can be pleasant and some sounds can be... annoying?
Mattaya, have you ever considered taking up philosophy? Poetry, perhaps?
mattaya:
I have three poems already published in a poetry book. thanks! I did take a class where we learned poetry though..o.O
Hammer-drills. If I ever meet the man who invented them, I think I will hammer-drill his toes off.
mattaya:
They do have a lot of construction going on especially in Beijing. I guess it's pleasure over pain. Had to endure those sounds for months but in return they built a big shopping mall.
deefoe:
yes another big shopping mall is worth hammer-drill sounds pushing you to suicide....
When a bus is at a bus stop and is waiting for the bus on front to move and the driver will hold his hand on the horn constantly.
For me (and no offense intended) it would be Mattaya claiming to be a USA citizen. He makes so many mistakes otherwise that it ain't funny.
A naturalized citizen maybe, born and raised there, never. Not even a dumb coonass will make his mistakes, and I have seen many on my bayou travels around Coin du Listin near Slidell, Louisiana.
Michael Thomas, did you learn a new word in your English class and assigned to use it in a sentence for practice?
Cleaning what ever is inside and spitting it out.....
The sound of passing gas in and express elevator just nanoseconds after the doors have closed...
Like several people have said before, the sound of someone spitting is the worst. And you can't escape it when inside a building. They even spit inside the bus. Inside!
spitting.
"Teacha me" or "laoshi", spoken in mass or to song.
Babies in mass.
The hack sound before spitting is gross, but there is one thing that actually is a more annoying sound.
2 people having a "discussion" in Chinese. You know the ones I'm talking about.... People talking at first, then it seems (at least to western ears) as exploding into a huge yelling argument. I think it's because of the tones in the language... To make your point, your only choice is to get louder AND LOUDER AND LOUDER.
In fact, you will see this between friendly conversation between 2 people. Half of the people you see here just having a converation sound like they are screaming at the top of their lungs in a heated argumen and they're just saying the equvelent of "long time no see, why haven't you called me?"
Plus, in accordance with this, the pointless arguments people have...
"What?!?! I was here yesterday and lettuce was 5 mao! Today it's 6 mao?!?!?! I should just commit suicide because of this robbery!!!"
"OK, you are a good customer, I will give you for 5 mao today, even if it hurts me!"
"if I am a good customer, why did YOU OFFER ME 6 MAO!!!!! YOU TRY CHEAT ME!!!!1111111"
"I NOT TRY CHEAT YOU!!!!111111 MY COST GO UP!!!11111111"
"YOULIAR!!!!11111 YUO NO WANT HELP ME!!!1111 WQNT CHAET ME!!!!!!!!!1111111"
I intentinally used Internet retard speak there because that's exactly what it's like. Retarded.
Spitting sound sucks; people speaking on the phone in Chinese, esp. in a bus get on my nerves; children reading after their teacher in the class sound like robots; the sound of the squeaking wheel of an el. bike on a busy street; greetings like, "Hello, laowai" drive me nuts; high-pitched singing in Chinese; news on Chinese TV, esp. when they repeat a hundred times : Diao Yu islands are an indispensable part of China, China is getting stronger & stronger , etc.
far and away is the spitting. honestly, I am shocked that they do not freak-out about it too! It is just soooooo disgustingly coarse and cringe-inducing. I have always wondered what the younger generation of Chinese girls think of this behavior ? Does it sicken them too ?
I'm worried that 'they' (the great Sino mass) will just continue to be oblivious. 90+ % of my Chinese acquaintances provide the same answer to me when I point out bad behavior; they say 'you (we, society) can't change it'. They have over the millenia been conditioned to accept any behavior without questioning it.
So, today, 2012, we have children peeing on mall floors, smoking anywhere, driving to kill/maim, yelling in public, violence that shocks (bite face off over a seat on the metro, death by a 1000 cuts, schoolgirls maiming other schoolgirls, ad infinitum), no manners, no civility.
Lord of the Flies writ large.
Axel said it best ' welcome to the Jungle...'
about the news Diao yu island belonging to China bothers my ears too! as a chinese , I cannot see our government are so spineless.
The sound of people who think I can't understand Chinese and try to take advantage of it. I walk down the street at night, minding my own business, only to hear someone say "(inaudiable)你妈的屄."
I doubt they'll find his body.
People slurping there food and that smacking sound when they eat with there month open.
The incessant and unnecessarily loud horn honking done by bus and big truck drivers. When taking a long-distance bus, the driver will honk the horn even with no other vehicles around...gotta make sure it still works (and can't have any sleeping passengers either).
