All neighborhoods have their benefits and drawbacks. Shekou is good for ex-pat familes or those on the ex pat package, though a little far removed from the city. Dameisha is far too, but close to the beach. If it’s super upscale you’re looking for, Overseas chinese town is probably the swankiest part of SZ.
After a year there my personal recommendation would be to stay away from Nanshan and Yantian - stay in Luohu or Futian.
Reason being, the city is like a croissant around Hong Kong - it's spread out like hell, making it incredibly mafan to go from one place to another. For instance, I lived in Yantian, and if I wanted to see a friend in Shekou, Nanshan, it could take me up to three hours to go and see him.
Additionally, Luohu has the direct train line to Hong Kong
Depends where you work and what your social life is like.
Perhaps a shared flat in complex above a brothel and between a bar and your place of employment, (unless of course you are a barman................. or a prostitute ).
It depends what you mean by convenient?
If you want to live near the Expat community, then Coco Park in Futian and Shekou is best.
Nanshan is a newer area and rather more expensive and further out of the city centre.
Futian is arguably the new city centre now and more upscale than Louhu and has a new border crossing to HK
Longgang District is much cheaper for renting but is a bit older part of the city but has easy transport links to the city centre.
Louhu is the older city centre and is where the most varied shopping can be found.
Baoan is developing fast now but is really a factory area.
So it really depends what you mean by convenient; transport is easy and convenient from most parts of the city.
Accommodation prices vary a lot from district to district.
Personally, I find Futian is the best area to live.
