Q: What's the most ridiculous food scam you've heard of in China?
Over the weekend I had a discussion with a Chinese person about organic food in China. He told me something interesting. He said, in the past people wanted fresh produce without insects so they overused pesticides and insects wouldn't go near the fruit and veg. Then people starting getting conscious of the health risks associated with eating toxic fruit and veg and now want to buy produce with insect holes in it because if insects go near it then it can't be THAT toxic. So now, farmers are actually putting fake insect holes into fruit and veg and just sprinkling insects over fresh produce to make it look more "natural" and "edible". I think that's the most ridiculous thing I've heard in a long time.

Yeh, that is pretty crazy; the depths of insanity people will go to to get paid, eh? The mind boggles. Never heard any story quite that bizarre but I did hear there was a scare going around about people making fake eggs. I found that pretty wild an idea. Can't imagine how it could have been done believably enough myself.

Pork being filled with chemicals so that it can be sold as beef...
Cheese made from flavored plastic...
Fake milk...
Fruit polished with car wax to make it look 'fresher'..
The stories never end here.
Fake rice. Yep, if you thought rice was safe, there is fake rice partly made from plastic.
Chickens injected with water to add weight. They do that to ground beef too!

Been going on in England for the past 20 years, still happening.
Any meat dish, it gets served and someone has already eating the meat and I get the bones. I went for dinner before I left and wanted meat, like a whole chicken, hey I haven't had Peking duck yet, it comes, looks yummy, nice golden brown skin, grab the first piece and I just start laughing, almost fell out of my chair, it was just skin, no meat but looked like a nice piece of breast meat.
Food scams are everywhere. Some of the foods that are badly fraud today are fishes,process foods and in most countries are seafoods. If a person buys seafood frequently, they should watch the supermarket or fish market like a hawk. The fishing industry, directly on down to the retail level, is rife with seafood deception. Take a look at the dairy industry in the United States of America, so many antibiotics and other drugs passed through the cows, you will never drink milk again in your life. Bottled water in the United Kingdom, sold as having Royal connections, coming straight out of the tap. Contaminated chicken breasts unfit for human consumption served up in some of the best and most expensive eating establishments in London. Not just a China thing then.
