Q: What's the most underestimated health hazard in China?

What's the one thing people consistently underestimate as a potential health hazard in China?

I've found that one of the reasons I'm so often sick here is because of unwashed air conditioners. Sometimes within mere minutes, my nose is runny, I'm sneezing and I have a headache. Makes you wonder how often they actually wash the filters in buildings here...

with air conditioners in Australia in a commercial environment office/workplace air conditioners must undergo 3monthly (general inspection, and filter clean), 6monthly (general maintenance, and filter clean) yearly (full maintenance and operational quality of the air conditioning)  here have seen none of this and quite concerned if any periodic maintenance is performed here.

Any way mine is office OH&S no one here knows or are aware of OH&S in the office

The air conditioner in my room? I'm pretty sure it has never been cleaned. I used to use it, but I won't again, partly for that reason, partly because it's not that hot lately, and partly because it will give me a horrible sore throat.

I would say another one has to do with medicine. They will take whatever the doctor gives them without question, not even bothering to find out if there is a cheaper alternative or if they really should take the stuff or not. Also, people blindly believe in TCM. After so many food scandals, no one really thinks about what could be in those capsules. I read that research by some scientists in Australia showed there was a bunch of crap that is likely to be hazardous in the capsules they tested, as well as very little of whatever it was supposed to have. Then there was also the scandal of capsules themselves, being made from shoe leather. All I can say is that I haven't taken any Chinese medicine while I have been here.

Speaking of pharmacies and medicine, most shops don't even have anyone licensed to answer questions about the products.  I came in looking for simple hydrogen peroxide solution, and asked (through my translating girlfriend) what percentage was the peroxide, and water, and nobody had any clue, simple a "maybe 3%, but I'm not sure".  Wow, it would be scary to ask for something important like medicine for your children.

Well, I assume that's why they turn to TCM. Unfortunately, nobody's regulating that, so who knows what's really in it.
