Q: What's the point of foreigners having a Chinese name?
Yeah I agree.
Lots of chinese registry systems can only handle 3 spaces for a name, so you must have a chinese name to make it work. But that's just a formality
But yeah I find it suspect too when somebody advertises themself as a chinese name.
I've always stood firm that being a sinophile kinda devalues you...like you'll get attention and flatter people but they won't respect you. It gives them face, not you.
I dont know much about that guy DaShen but I know that while he's known i don't think he's really respected. Or that guy trying to promote his own pro-china book on here a few weeks ago. Could see right through him.
Smart people here are fully aware of the problems of this place, so they see right through it and think that person is a buffoon.
Dumb people who are super nationalistic again feel flattered but see you as weak.
Remember that in a culture that values nationalism they're not gonna respect you for trashing your home country

From a business perspective, the local government seem to prefer using my Chinese name on documentation rather than English. They, indeed, gave me a Chinese name and I use that now when it is needed.
