Q: What's the procedure for getting your pet out of China?
I'd like to know how to get a cat to the EU. What vaccines, paperwork etc. do I have to arrange? I heard there is such a thing as a cat passport. Crazy!

Yes you need a pet passport for you cat. However you need the cat to be electronically tagged in EU for that to happen. The best to do is to read up on the rules on your destination country's veterinarian authorities web site. (I am guessing all EU countries have a such)
Basically what you need is proof that the cat is not suffering from any disease. Typically what is needed is vaccination + subsequent proof that vaccination has worked (blood test)
Further. You need to get an export permit from the Chinese authorities. I believe that most real vets can do that.
You can also Google "Pet relocation" and find companies that will do all the paperwork for you.
When you fly to Europe, fly with a European airline. They will allow your cat as hand luggage. The different airlines have different requirements to cage etc during the flight. Prices also differ. I think we paid about €200 from Frankfurt to Guangzhou for our dog.
And don't forget to have your pet heavily sedate. You'll save him from getting scared to death.

Cats are much different than dogs. Try put any cat in a cage for a short ride to the vet. Even if you keep it on the passenger seat so he can see you, it'll meow endlessly.
At least this is my experience with all the cats I had.

I wrote a blog about flying in mainland China with my dog, it's here on this site somewhere.
It's a bit of a nightmare to be honest. Nobody( in the smaller cities at least) know the proper procedure.
If you are in Beijing or Shanghai then it should be easier.
The documents needed for mainland travel are pretty extensive, I presume international travel would be more difficult.

when we landed in Guangzhou airport we had to go and wake up the guy that was to process out dog, we could have walked straight through the check. I would have thought they would at least be prepared as the airline must have informed a dog has landed.
You need a Veterinary health certificate and vacinations must be done, rabies etc, prior to 30 days of departure, microchip for international use- there is a difference. You need to government forms filled out and properly. Its a nightmare doing this from home, gone outside the box- redo, signed in blue ink- redo, signed instead of printed- redo.
I believe the cat must also be body scanned to check for contraband, and it also must give it's pawprints at immigration.
